Based on the 802.11b standard, these hotspots mean that anyone with a wireless-enabled PDA or laptop can surf the Internet and send email at high speed, without having to plug into a network.

Wi-Fi hot spots are targeted both at business users and consumers, and this is reflected in the wide range of different access packages on offer. Some operators are targeting the business market by offering monthly and annual subscriptions. At other hotspots, users can buy as little as 30 minutes worth of wireless access for a few dollars.

First, the good news: Getting online takes little effort. In most cases, you just need a Wi-Fi enabled notebook and an account with a wireless Internet service provider (WISP). Click here to learn how you can log on to a wireless hotspot.

What's the bad news? WISPs charge as much as S$10 per connection or up to S$50 a month--twice what a dial-up account costs. Subscription to one Wi-Fi operator also doesn't entitle you to log on at hotspots operated by a rival operator--so if you're planning to sign up it is important to choose a service provider with hotspots near where you work, live, or travel.

1. SingTel Wireless Surf Zone
With more than 150 locations islandwide, SingTel's wireless hotpots offer the widest coverage in Singapore. These include popular dining areas and fast food outlets like Delifrance, Burger King and Starbucks. Subscription is free for existing SingNet and SingTel Mobile account holders.

2. StarHub Wireless Broadband Hub At the moment, only Changi International Airport and Suntec City are the two areas to feature StarHub's Wireless Broadband Hub. But you need to be a StarHub Internet account holder in order to utilize this wireless service.

3. Bluengine Wireless
Bluengine offers free wireless access at certain locations for M1 subscribers. Bluengine's wireless plan also allows subscribers to access wireless hotspots from 5G and Starhub.

4. 5G Wireless
All of 5G's seven hotspots are located in the city, within the Shenton Way and Orchard Road areas. The company's subscription plans are targeted mostly at business and corporate users.
