VLC 2.0 player for iOS could be headed to Cydia

VLC
Folks who like to watch videos on their smartphones and tablets will probably be jumping with joy at this bit of news--the popular video player will be returning to iOS and coming to Android in the "coming weeks".

Previously available on the Apple App Store, the media player was pulled due to an incompatibility with the GNU General Public License.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, a developer at VLC, told CNET Asia that a "change of license is not enough" to get the VLC app on the Apple App Store.

"But who knows," he said. "Maybe Apple will finally clarify its terms of service..."

He is of course, referring to the the DRM that the Apple Store includes in its apps, which violates the GPL distribution license.

There is hope yet for iOS users, as he confirmed that the developers would consider releasing the app on the Cydia App Store which is only accessible on jailbroken devices. The previous version of the VLC player is currently available there.

Lastly, Kempf added that the Android version will appear in the Android market "in the coming weeks, maybe after a beta".
