Unlock doors by checking in on Foursquare
I love Foursquare as much as the next smartphone-addicted person, but this might be a potentially dangerous use of the mobile app.
A couple of Brooklyn residents (and Foursquare fanatics) have rigged up their front door so that when they check into "Apartm.net," the front door opens. Apparently all these developers used was Foursquare's Alpha 2.0 API, a Mac Mini, speaker wire, and "knowing about electricity."
Before you start looking up the address, not just anyone can log in and walk in. Only those who have been white-listed can enter. But apparently everyone is welcome to stop by for the New Year's Eve party… which sounds like the makings of a complete disaster.
According to Gizmodo, Nick Hall and Erin Sparling (the brothers behind this innovation) are considering selling the system as a DIY-kit, but they haven't figured out how to commercialize it yet. Naturally, there are going to be a LOT of security details to consider before this becomes available for retail.
