After some postive result in using Windows Mobile 6.5 onmy Omnia II for the first day, the sustainability story continues.

HSDPA connection is suspended upon system on standby. As such, recovery of connection is needed once turned on. (But all schedule job runs as per schedule without fail and IM polling still continues - maybe at a lower frequency).

Bluetooth connection turn on takes more steps now. Previously wireless manager will be activated upon clicking on GSM icon on top of the screen but now showing connectivity with a link to wireless manager.

Main storage and program RAM as per before, does not show large consuming contributor. Program RAM is now 243MB/256MB maybe due to 1000 contact records. Main storage showing installed MapKing and Navfone and memory now is 437MB/512MB even the installation is on My Storage. Will need to migrate these program to either My Storage or Storage Card.

With the above menory usage, the system suspended several time. I didn't use the word hang as after a long time, it is back to normal. Not sure if this is due to memory leak. Camera is now affected as well. Activating camera shows error message "Camera requests 10MB memory space for running". Device off then on will help a little.

Widget keep showing connection problem when the system go sleeping. If the connection is to be suspended during sleep, there must be effort to surpress these errors.

Still, having the battery problem resolved is a great relief.

Can't believe it... bought it convinced that would surpass my previous HTC Touch Pro, and all other TouchPhones and PDAs I've been using for the last 10 years... and what a disappointement.
It simply hangs and crashes everyday, straight from the box... I didn't even bother to isntall any additional application, forget about GPS... what's the point of the big screen and all the "fantastic" features advertised in all Shops...
On top of it, the touch sensitive screen is slow, and the responsiveness lag on some applications, like SMS reading/writing, Contacts, Calendar, etc, is so bad, it reminds me devices I used 10 ago.
And the biggest joke of all is there's no reset button available from the outside of the case, contrary to all my previous devices of several other brands; so, in order to reset it, have constantly to open it as to access the battery.
Couldn't find yet the hanging/crashing trigger, it appears to hang after the end of a call, but not always.

In my opinion this is a joke of an unfinished and untested device... absolutely a shame for Samsung... I will of course never consider such brand any more, and I'm also of course spreading the news to all my colleagues in my company (a worldwide leader of Internet and Mobile technologies).

The latest firmware update is supposed to have threaded sms. Go to one of the Samsung Service centres.
Or, you can try download a small app... From my previous post:

I found in other forums a lot of solutions that required registry hacks. But since I'm not techie, I didn't want to go too deep. I found a CAB that does it. Go to modaco.com Search for "i8000 Samsung Messagebox" and go to the post by taril. You have to be registered to download his CAB. I have threaded SMS, but not quite like the old Omnia. My sent messages dont appear as threaded... but it's still better than not having threaded messages at all.

The name card reader is part of an application called Smart Reader, that has options "BizCard", "Document", "Translation" and "Image" once you start the application.
Using "BizCard" is basically taking a photo of a card. When you click on "BizCard" it turns on a camera app, with an onscreen guide that the biz card should be framed within. When the program determines that the card is suitably framed, it automatically takes the photo. It then goes through a text recognition process, when the text automatically identifies which one is name, email, phone, fax etc. If you click on the text that it has recognized for, say, phone number, you can see the image that it captured, and you can edit the number yourself if incorrect. I didn't need to edit individual numbers within a number field - but I did need to reselect the fax number because it had incorrectly identified the phone number as the fax number. This was simple to fix - I just had to select the other number it had recognized.
For "Document" recognition, it's essetially the same process. Overall, accuracy was about 95% - depending on the size, colour, contrast of the text on the card.

"Translation" is only English/French, which I didn't try. The "Image" option is just a library of all the images taken with this program.

Overall, I'd say it's pretty nifty, but I'm not sure I'd use it that much.

Samsung Omnia II (I8000)

In Tech : Mobile Tech

Description: Though some may shun Windows Mobile because of other newer operating systems out there, there's no denying that the Omnia II presents great value-for-money compared with most other touchscreen smartphones.
