Top 5 gaming notebooks

A gaming laptop is unlikely to match the performance of a custom-built desktop gaming rig, but the gap is narrowing with each iteration. The latest high-end gaming laptops have many features desired by gamers: Full-HD display, 3D support, LED-backlit keyboard and simulated surround audio.

The typical gaming laptop is a 15- or 17-inch desktop replacement that weighs around 3kg and only "portable" in the most generous sense of that word. There is a rare exception for those who really need to game on-the-go: Alienware's M11x R3. Here's our list of the best gaming laptops you can find in the market now.

CNET Asia rating: 8.3 stars

The good: Markedly improved graphics performance and battery life; solid build quality; USB 3.0 ports; 5.1 surround-sound Klipsch speakers.

The bad: Chunky chassis; lack of optical drive can be frustrating when installing games.

The bottom line: The 2011 Alienware M11x makes big leaps forward in performance, graphics, and battery life, while keeping a reasonable price.

Why it rocks: With its compact 11-inch form factor, the 2kg M11x R3 is the most portable laptop around that still provides top-notch gaming performance.

Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT 540M

Outlook: Asus' flagship gaming laptop has everything you'll expect from a gaming powerhouse: Quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia 3D Vision support, high-end graphics, a Blu-ray writer and an SSD option.

Why it rocks: Inspired by the design of stealth warplanes, this notebook looks as deadly as its specs suggest. The design is also functional--vents are placed at the rear to direct noise and heat away from the user.

Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M

Outlook: The new, redesigned HP Envy 15 was announced recently and will be available in December. The new model adds a Beats Audio analog dial along with a proximity-based backlit keyboard and a full-HD display. It also comes with AMD's next-gen Radeon HD graphics that should bring better performance and consume less power.

Why it rocks: If you're looking for big boomy explosions in your games, the six speakers and two subwoofers (enhanced with Beats Audio) on the Envy 15 seem to be a class above the competition.

Graphics: Next-gen AMD Radeon HD graphics

Outlook: With its new Series 7 Gamer laptop, Samsung gets into the 3D gaming fray with a splash, literally. This 3.8kg behemoth is packed with the latest high-end hardware, from its Core i7 processor to AMD's top graphics chip.

Why it rocks: An 8GB SSD cache ensures that this laptop is almost as responsive and speedy as an SSD-equipped notebook. Best of all, its asking price of S$2,899 (US$2,219) is practically a steal for a high-end gaming laptop.

Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6970M

Outlook: Equipped with Nvidia's 3D Vision and GeForce GTX 560M graphics, this 17-incher supports 3D games and movies without breaking a sweat. Harmon Kardon speakers with a subwoofer give it the audio chops to go along with its raw performance.

Why it rocks: Equally competent at both gaming and multimedia, the X770 has some unique features such as dual Webcams. So you can now take 3D images and even videos of your victory dance the next time you achieve a kill streak in your favorite FPS.

Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M

this list is missing the best one for the money in my opinion, the MSI GT780DXR-446US. It has the same I7 cpu as the rest but it comes with 16gb ddr3 ram, 1.5TB hard drive space(2x 750gb 7200rpm in raid 0) a blue ray BURNER full HD 17.3" dual LED matte screen, has a back lit keyboard with programmable multi colored lights similar to the alienware M17x, 3GB DDR5 video ram Nvida GeForce GTX 570M. and it doesnt have too bad battery life either for a high powered gaming rig I surfed over a wifi connection for over 3.5 hrs before I shut it down cause it was fixing to die. I owned a Alienware M17X r2 dual video cards I7 cpu specs not too far off this one but my MSI blows it out of the water and I paid 2300 for the alienware and only paid 1859 for my GT780. Much better deal so check one out if u get a chance it'll be worth it

Honestly speaking, you can get lower price laptop if you ship from oversea such as usa. By the way, you cannot tell the how fast the CPU is just by judging the price. For me, I actually bought a HP dv6 @ 1.5 k with core i7 and nvidia GT 260m, 4gb ram. When comparing gaming notebook, the first to look out must be the graphic card, the best graphic card available should be Radeon Mobility HD 5870 from ATi and Geforce GTX 480m from Nvidia, any laptop without anyone or even any two (in crossfire or SLI) of these shouldn't place on the first place here. After graphic card of course follow by the microprocessor, actually i5 with 2 cores should be powerful enough to handle all the mainstream games because not many games nowaday can make full use of the 4 cores and some even slow down in quad core systems. Lastly we should look into the RAM, the trend now is 4 GB or RAM, the more RAM you have in the laptop the faster the laptop will be in multitasking. 8 RAM should be more than enough because games nowadays still cannot make full use of the RAM, but you can run two games smoothly at the same time if you have more RAM, but just how many game can you play at a time? Beside all these technical spec we should look in, there are three more areas we can consider before buying any gaming laptop. First one should be the price of the laptop, this will be the main concern if your pocket is not big enough or you might think that there is no point to pay so much for gaming. In addition, there are other ways of getting the same laptop at a much cheaper price to make sure every cent you spent is worth it. Secondly should be the design of the laptop, if appearance is also your concern, then you really have to do a lot of research for ALL the laptops with the specs that you want that are available in the market. After that then compare and pick the design that you want. Lastly will be the battery life. In general, gaming laptops that can run for 3-4 hours are very rare and already very impressive. But if you got one which cannot even run pass the 1 hour limit and only plan to use it as desktop replacement, then just forget it and get a desktop which come with a better specs at a much MUCH cheaper price because there is no point to stuck beside a powerpoint when you are calling your computer a laptop. In conclusion, I think the laptops used in this ranking is relatively old even considering the date that this article posted and this ranking shouldn't take any sales data into consideration since more people buy doesn't mean a certain laptop is better because everyone's need is different. The needs of the majority cannot be used to judge on the need of a person. All of us, as long as a gamer should know that laptops or even desktops from alienware should always be the top of the list. They are the only vendor that provide crossfire or SLI solutions as well as an ultra high resolution RGB LED screen which can go beyond 1080p. RGB screen provide the most vibrant colours and most accurate colours. So just considering the price is being too super-visual, the one which we should really look into should be the "overall quality of the laptop per dollar"
