This mouse is not just cordless, it's Mouseless

Mouseless is a project by Pranav Mistry of the MIT Fluid Interfaces Group. What it does is to create the feeling of using a mouse without actually having one physically. This is achieved by using an infrared beam and sensor, which will help detect your hand's position. So all that's left for the user to do is move a cupped hand as if it were holding a mouse and the system will detect its movement and clicks.

This is a research project, so we won't get to try it out unless it goes commercial. According to Mistry on his project page, his team implemented a working prototype at a cost of about US$20. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.

Editor John Chan's love for gadgets can be traced back to the days when he disassembled his toys and couldn't put them back together again. He practices great restraint in not opening up every review product that comes through the CNET Asia Labs, and before that, in his previous job at HardwareZone. He has reviewed items big and small, from mobile phones to projectors and feels everyone should carry a multitool at all times in case of MacGyver situations.
