Sony outs Alpha DSLR-A450, still no video

Sony has just announced a new Alpha to its dSLR lineup, but much to the chagrin of its fans, the A450 does not have a video-recording function.

The 14.2-megapixel camera sits between the entry-level A3xx and the midrange A5xx series, so users looking to step up from a basic dSLR can consider it. The A450's main highlight is its maximum 7-frames-per-second (fps) burst mode, which makes it really handy for capturing action shots. However, the company reiterates that the shooting conditions and type of media used will affect the performance.

Here's a quick rundown of the A450's specs.

  • 14.2 megapixels
  • 2.7-inch LCD
  • 95 percent field of view (for optical viewfinder)
  • 1,050-shot battery life (according to CIPA when using optical viewfinder)
  • Maximum 7fps burst mode or 5fps continuous mode
  • Sensor-shift image stabilizer
  • Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD/SDHC compatible
  • Pricing and availability TBA

  • We wonder why Sony has yet to implement video recording in its new wave of dSLRs, especially since it told us last year that such a feature will be a necessity in these cameras. Given that its main competitors are dishing out dSLRs with at least HD-quality video-capture functions--which are gaining traction with consumers--Sony may be losing out in this segment.
