Sony Ericsson has just announced that it will launch its first TD-SCDMA smartphone with China Mobile, the Republic's largest telecommunications service provider, next quarter.

The company, owned by Ericsson and Sony Corp, said in a press release that the A8i was co-developed with China Mobile and will support the TD-SCDMA 3G network, as well as run on the operator's Open Mobile System (OMS) 2.0 smartphone platform. The latter is a proprietary software developed by China Mobile using Google source codes.

The A8i comes with a 3.5-inch 854 x 480-pixel touchscreen, 3.5mm audio jack, microSD card slot and 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash. Connectivity features include Bluetooth stereo A2DP, Assisted-GPS for navigation, Wi-Fi and support for China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) mobile TV standard. Sony Ericsson's TrackID, a service which lets users identify music over-the-air, will also be linked directly to China Mobile's entertainment download offering for access to local content.

"China is a hugely important market for Sony Ericsson and we are committed to maintaining our strong position and driving growth by continually introducing new and exciting products into this market," Sony Ericsson's CEO Bert Nordberg said in a press release statement.

Sony Ericsson shipped approximately 11 million phones worldwide in Q2 and had 3.4 percent of the mobile phone market share putting the phone-maker at fifth place globally, according to Gartner's latest report.
