Snapshots: Kerstin Duell

Duell is a photojournalist whose body of work has graced the covers of magazines like Asian Photography and WorldVision. According to Duell, photography is all about who you are, how you approach people and about your state of mind. There are days when she says she would not go out shooting because there's simply no point. Though we are featuring just her nightlife shots this time, we will be showcasing more of her photojournalistic works in a later installment.

The images you see from this feature have been reproduced with permission from Kerstin Duell. If you wish to be featured in our interviews or know any photo buffs who may be interested, write to us, and we'll get back to you.

Her profile:
I started shooting as a teenager because my Dad used to give me his old cameras. So I have used SLRs of all the main brands. My parents took me to travel the world as a kid--Europe, Asia and a bit of North Africa--and this sparked a keen interest in people and places. Later, I lived, studied and worked in New Zealand, Seville, Berlin, London, Paris, Bangkok and Singapore.

In 2002, I started working on social and political issues in Southeast Asia and India. I captured people living with HIV/AIDS, slums, refugee camps, orphanages and the likes. The people were impressive and I learned a lot from them. On the way, I contributed a lot of photos to Southern non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

As a photojournalist I can help to give marginalized communities a face and voice. In the future, I would like to work for magazines whose editors are not afraid to point at injustice. Of course, I am dreaming of World Press Photo and National Geographic--but who is not!

Movement is one of the most difficult photographic tasks, especially in the dark. In this photo, I used the night mode plus a weak flash setting.

Here I used an extremely low flash setting since the background was much brighter than the human subjects.

In such low light, you can only increase the ISO and try to keep your hand steady.

Sage club door bitch
She was not bitchy at all and struck such a cool "Berlin" pose that I simply had to shoot. I also liked the two-coloured frame as well.

Sometimes I like the blur in low light--as long as I can still see the tattoos clearly.

Tacheles
This was taken at one of the many techno parties in Berlin. I really enjoyed the decor! Shot using a high ISO and no flash because there was a laser light somewhere in the back.

Volksbuehne Berlin
This club is located in an area that was once part of East Germany. It has extremely high ceilings from where these kitschy lamps are dangling down from... I liked the reflection in the crystal and didn't bother too much about sharpness.

Starts with Berlin tango scene...
This club is located in an area that was once part of East Germany. It has extremely high ceilings from where these kitschy lamps are dangling down from... I liked the reflection in the crystal and didn't bother too much about sharpness. Berlin's world-famous Argentinean tango scene features many outdoor locations during the summer. Since I had movement in low light in the foreground, I tried to contrast it with the dome in the background.
