Singapore's infocommunications and technology scene is being injected with a range of solutions aimed to bridge social and government services. This was revealed by the nation's Acting Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts, Lui Tuck Yew, at Infocomm Media Business Exchange (imbX) 2010, Tuesday morning.

Lui touched on a series of updates for the Intelligent Nation 2015 (iN2015) masterplan and introduced new e-services. We've summarized the key points of his opening address below.

  • The Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN), which is the foundation of the iN2015, will reach 60 percent of households by year-end and across the nation by mid-2012. The Infocomm Experience Centre, which will let people preview and experience the Next Gen NBN, will be officially launched on July 1 this year.
  • The Singapore Internet Exchange (SGIX) is a platform that will allow different telco service providers, both local and foreign, to share information with their consumer and business subscribers. End-users in the city-state can look forward to faster video streaming and smoother online gaming experiences with this platform, Lui said. SingTel, PacNet and Nucleus Connect are three of the 15 companies that have currently signed on with SGIX.
  • The National Authentication Framework (NAF) aims to provide a secure and cost-effective platform for e-commerce and e-banking services. Authentication services are expected to be standardized with the introduction of NAF. The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore will set up a wholly owned subsidiary for the delivery of the infrastructure and services of NAF.
  • The TradeXchange platform will help companies integrate key processes in marine cargo insurance, freight management and trade financing. These projects will be co-invested by the industry and the Singapore Government. According to Lui, about 20 percent of the S$4 million annual export shipments will benefit from TradeXchange by end-2011.
  • The nation's Digital Concierge program is also getting a boost of S$10 million by IDA and six other companies. This will help to develop shared mobile services that can be used for transactional, location-based and mobile e-commerce services.
  • Singapore's media industry will also get a new home dubbed Mediapolis@one-north. The media hub, which was unveiled back in 2008, will be ready for occupancy by Q1 2011. The cluster occupies an area of 16,000sqm and will be a self-contained facility for testbedding and prototyping of innovative concepts in interactive digital media, film and broadcast, as well as an incubation for new startups.
  • A year-long nationwide 3D TV trial involving MediaCorp, StarHub and SingTel begins in Singapore today. For more information, click here.
