Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac 7.0

Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac 7.0 is slow and a bit expensive, probably because it includes a Windows license, but it's cheaper than buying and maintaining a real PC--even a low-end one.

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Media Center Edition 2005 is the best desktop DVR app out there, but it's not yet ready to play hub for your digital home.

Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2

We recommend installing Windows XP SP2 but only after Microsoft has had a few weeks to work out the kinks.

MS Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition - Complete package - 1 server, 5 clients - STD - CD/DVD

For small businesses that need a business in a box and want to stick with Microsoft technology, SBS 2003 is the only game in town.

Apple Mac OS X 10.3 Panther

Panther adds new and useful features, but at the expense of some old standbys. Current Jaguar users need not apply.

Lindows 4.0

Lindows 4.0 remains the easiest Linux distribution around, but its software subscription scheme can get pricey. We'd also prefer more bundled apps.

SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional

SuSE Linux 8.2 is an extremely friendly choice for Windows users. If you're switching or dual-booting, make this distribution your first choice.

Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional

Red Hat remains a solid Linux contender, but Windows switchers or dual-booters should stick with SuSE for easier installation.

Virtual PC 5.0 for Windows

Virtual PC for Windows 5.0 boosts performance over the last version. It's the best emulator around for running multiple Windows or Linux OSs on one PC.
