Among all the printer manufacturers, Lexmark is probably the only company that produces just printers. By focusing on developing inkboxes, the company believes that it can deliver better print quality to consumers. Not surprisingly, Lexmark is not slowing down in its attempt to capture more market share and its latest products target a wide array of consumers, from students to office workers.
To keep up with the wireless connectivity trend, some of the latest All-In-One (AIO) printers targeted at home users come with Wi-Fi. To sweeten the deal, two of them incorporate 2-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels instead of the traditional LCDs. The tradeoff for using OLED display is its slightly higher cost which is reflected in the price of the printers. At S$249, the X5650 is the lowest-priced model and comes with four functions (print, copy, scan and fax), automatic document feeder (ADF) and 2-inch OLED display. The wireless version, the X6650, has similar specifications and costs S$40 more. These inkboxes are available in stores now.
To meet the needs of small offices, Lexmark is introducing three SOHO AIOs. All units will come with ADF and are configured differently to suit various working environments. For businesses that don't require a fax function, the X4975 has a 25-page ADF, 2.4-inch LCD and a maximum print speed of 30 pages per minute (ppm). The X7675 is beefed up with a fax function and has wireless and Ethernet connectivity options. To help companies reduce costs, it also comes with duplex printing function. Unfortunately, these SOHO models won't make it for Christmas this year as they will be available only in January 2009.
Lexmark also showcased six mono laser printers which are said to be eco-friendly. All these units will have onboard auto-duplex function, while the instant warm-up fuser conserves energy when in standby mode. There is also an Eco mode which claims to reduce power consumption further. There are several models with almost similar names, but here's a trick to differentiate them. Units with n suffixes denote network capability, while those with a w suffix mean that there is wireless printing option. Basic printers such as the E260dn has a print speed of 33ppm and network capability, while its more able sibling, the E460dw, has a Wi-Fi option and paper tray that can handle 850 sheets. This will be useful for those who print heavy loads.
The latest color printers belong to a new series of machines in Lexmark's enterprise lineup. Called the C540 series they feature the 4800 Color Quality mode which promises to deliver "stunning colors and graphics". At the same time they are as eco-friendly as their mono laser printer siblings. Some models have auto-duplex printing and slots for high-yield cartridges. This will help companies cut down on their running costs, which is especially important with the economy isn't doing so well now.
Both mono and color lasers printers are available in stores now. More details on the following pages.
