Canon unveils 10 new Pixma printers

By Leonard Goh, CNET Asia

Canon has announced 10 printers targeted at various consumers from home users to professional photographers. Some of these inkboxes are All-In-Ones (AIOs), while there are several models dedicated photo printers.

The Pixma MP996 and MP648 lead the pack of new AIOs by offering home and office users high-resolution, 9,600 x 2,400dpi printing. Besides delivering photo-quality printouts, the MP996 has a 3.8-inch LCD for navigating the menus. The MP648 has a smaller 3-inch display, but has Wi-Fi connectivity for wireless operation.

For those seeking value-for-money AIOs, Canon has introduced five Pixmas: The MP568, MP558, MP496, MP276 and MP258. These affordable machines come with various functionalities, such as Wi-Fi on the MP568. According to the Japanese company, these AIOs take an average of 39 to 43 seconds to output 4R-sized prints. Some units have color LCD screens and card readers. Find out more on the next page.

Users who print more photographs can look to the Pixma iP4760, a single-function photo printer which has automatic duplex output as well as a function for printing on CD/DVD media. Speed-wise, this machine can churn out a 4R-sized picture in 20 seconds.

For shutterbugs who want to print large photographs, the Pixma iX7000 is capable of delivering A3+-sized pictures. This printer is touted by the firm to combine the best of both laser and inkjet printing technologies, with five-color ink tanks for realistic printouts and a clear ink which makes the photo water-resistant and prevents curling at the edges. For networking, the iX7000 has an Ethernet port for sharing among several users.

At the top of the line is the Pro9000 Mark II which replaces the Pro9000. As with its predecessor, the professional-oriented Pro9000 Mark II has an eight-ink system but upgrades include faster print speed and a new Ambient Light Correction function. This feature allows users to set the light condition which the photograph will be placed in, such as a gallery which uses warm lighting. The printer will then automatically adjust the tone of the photograph for the stipulated light temperature in order to keep the colors accurate.

These 10 printers will be available in September for Asia. Prices can be found on the next page.
