Epson's five new office-oriented printers

By Leonard Goh, CNET Asia

Epson is probably better known for its photo-quality inkjet printers, but the Japanese company seems to be aiming for a piece of the small business and home office pie with its new lineup of inkboxes. To achieve this, Epson said that the cost per print for its latest machines are similar to what laser printers are currently offering. This is partially in line with its plan to enter the commercial and industrial markets as the company had mentioned at a trade event earlier this year.

The new T and TX series are challenging entry-level laser printers by promising "razor-sharp text" reproduction traditionally associated with only the bigger machines. Epson claims to achieve this with the Micro Piezo printheads that utilize the Variable Sized Droplet Technology.

New to the T-series are the Stylus Office T30 and Stylus Office T40W. The two printers share similar print speeds of up to 38 pages per minute (ppm) in black text draft mode, and 27ppm for quality text output. At this speed, both are on-par with most laser printers used in offices. What distinguishes these two models is the onboard wireless capability found on the T40W. This will come in handy for sharing the inkbox among several users.

The latest babies in the TX lineup are the Stylus Office TX300F and the TX600FW. Both multifunction units sport a 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) and can churn out 38 pages of text in draft mode. The W at the end of the TX600FW denotes Wi-Fi and allows multiple users to print wirelessly using this machine.

Oddly, these four printers don't come with duplex printing options. We think this is a great feature to for office users because it can help reduce cost by printing on both sides of the paper. Epson told CNET Asia that it will listen to comsumers' needs and if there is sufficient demand, it will implement this function in future models.

Also announced is the Stylus Photo TX700W, Epson's answer to aspiring photographers who need quality photo printouts as well as a multifunction printer to handle small business needs. It runs on a six-ink system with two paper trays to accommodate both normal and photo paper. Tech-savvy shutterbugs will appreciate the onboard wireless function which can help clear clutter on the desktop. An optional duplex printing module is available for S$49.90 (US$36.74)

These five printers will be available in Singapore and Malaysia from November 7. We will update on the availability of the inkboxes in other regions once the information is released.
