Portable printers for people on the go

By Felisa Yang, CNET.com

Though it's rare, sometimes you really just have to print on the go. Whether you're a harried businessperson producing documents on a plane, or a party host who wants guests to get snapshots in a jiffy, a portable printer is just the thing. Not all portable printers are alike, though. Those geared for businesspeople print on standard paper and focus on text quality, while tiny printers for general consumers are geared toward photography. All the printers below have optional batteries for true portability (print at the park!), and some even offer carrying cases or built-in handles so you can grab and go.

1.  Canon SELPHY CP740

CNET Asia rating: 7 out of 10
The good: Inexpensive; good quality prints; very easy to use; retractable USB cable/connector is a nice touch.
The bad: Prints are a bit slower than the competitions'; very limited onboard photo-editing features; photo colors need a bit of improvement.
The bottom line: The Canon Selphy CP740 offers a decent feature package and quality prints for an inexpensive compact photo printer. Casual snapshooters will be satisfied with this, but users who need more features should look elsewhere.

3.  Epson PictureMate PM250

First take
This Epson looks no more than a simple picnic lunchbox, but open up the lid and paper tray and you'll have a portable photo printer. What makes this PictureMate tick is the optional battery pack which allows you to print untethered. You can preview your images and do basic image editing on the 2.5-inch LCD screen. With a Bluetooth adapter, you can print directly from your handheld. Alternatively, you can slot your media into the built-in memory card reader or your USB thumbdrive to the PictBridge port.

4.  HP Photosmart A626

CNET Asia rating: 6.6 out of 10
The good: Small size makes it easy to carry around; large touch screen LCD on an adjustable panel; same broad feature set as the Photosmart A826; can make prints as large as 5 x 7-inches.
The bad: Slow prints and middling print quality.
The bottom line: The HP Photosmart A626 is supposed to bridge the gap between the A826 and the A526 snapshot printers by providing lots of features, good print quality, and decent print speeds, but it falls short on the last two counts.

5.  HP Deskjet 460cb

CNET Asia rating: 7 out of 10
The good: Compact and rugged design; a whole range of connectivity features including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, PictBridge and memory card slots; acceptable print performance; average battery performance.
The bad: Slow startup; vibrations detected during print jobs; slight banding issues in photos.
The bottom line: We love the fact that we can carry this Deskjet while traveling and not look like a clown, but don't expect too much on performance and print quality.
