Gunning for the top with LED

By Philip Wong

When it comes to printers, few come close to OKI Data in terms of the technical expertise and heritage. Having been in the field for over 50 years, the Japanese company has been instrumental in various printing technologies such as Serial Impact Dot Matrix and digital LED. Its recent achievements include garnering the number two spot in global color single-function printer market according to IDC's Q1 2006 report.

Having enjoyed much success in Europe and US, OKI Data is now drawing up plans to strengthen its Asia presence with an eye in turning the region into one of its core business pillars. At a recent tour of its Thailand manufacturing facility, Takaaki Hagiwara, managing director of OKI Data (Singapore) cited brand awareness as one of the key challenges for the local markets.

In a bid to beef up the OKI brand name and its printer business in the region, OKI Data has recently invested in new offices in Korea and Malaysia as well as a software development center in Dalian, China. To coincide with the launch of its latest range of single-pass color LED printers, the company is also giving away a lifetime warranty on its print head, further sweetening the attractive pricings.

The new C3000 and C5000 series share many common features and capabilities. Most notable are the proprietary ProQ2400 multilevel technology and high-definition toner which it claims to triumph competitors' print quality. To add more value, the printers are also bundled with in-house developed software for pre-defined templates (banner, name card and etc) and media-optimized Web page printings.

Targeted at individuals and micro workgroups, its entry-level C3300n and C3400n LED printers are light on pricing yet heavy on performance--featuring speedy print speeds of up to 16 pages per minute (ppm) for color and 20ppm for monochrome. Speed aside, the compact C3000 series is also equipped with a separate toner cartridge and fuser unit which are aimed at minimizing running cost as either can be replaced independently.

For uncompromising print performance, OKI is pitching the C5600n, C5700n, C5800n and C5900n LED printers. Designed for small to advanced workgroups, they offer fast color and monochrome print speeds of up to 26 and 32ppm respectively. Other noteworthy features include a rated sub-11-second first print lead time and additional software bundle for usage reporting and printer network administration.
