Performance
The A616 took approximately 10 seconds to power up, which was disappointing even though shutting the unit down took only 1.2 seconds. On average, our print samples in Best-quality setting with Photo Fix enabled took 1.56 minutes from the time we hit the Print button until the picture rolled out onto the holding tray. Turning off the Photo Fix option shortened the print time by a bit. When printing in Normal quality, the machine took about 1.1 minutes.
One thing to note: Printing stops if the cartridge compartment door is opened. You can resume printing once the cover is closed. Our test results were obtained by directly printing from an Imation 1GB SD card on HP's Advanced Photo paper.
Image Quality
With the Photo Fix turned on, the colors in our photos were noticeably more saturated. The edges were also a little sharper. However, there was no discernable difference printing in Best and Normal quality. We liked how our test images turned out with vivid colors and dry to the touch.
The HP A616 uses the HP 110 tri-color print cartridge that is estimated to cost about US$19.99 and can print approximately 55 4 x 6-inch color photos. There's also the HP 110 photo pack available which includes a custom-filled HP110 tri-color print cartridge with the new dye-based Vivera inks and 120 sheets of 4R Advanced Photo Paper. This bundle is slated to be priced at US$29.99.
