The design of the Brother DCP-120C isn't the sleekest, but behind its shades of gray, the handling of the machine is very much straightforward. You'll find a one-line monochrome LCD on the right together with numerous buttons for adjusting printer settings. Paper is fed into the printer via a loading tray and it comes back out from the front of the printer where you load the media.

The onboard memory card reader, which Brother dubs the PhotoCapture Center, reads most types of media including CompactFlash Type I, Smart Media, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Microdrives, Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard and xD-Picture Cards. Adapters are required for smaller formats like the miniSD and Memory Stick Duo.

The DCP-120C is a multifunction printer for both the home and the home office. It can print, copy and scan in both color and monochrome. The company claims print speeds of up to 20ppm in black/white and 15ppm in color, which is rather decent for an All-in-One. Print resolutions max out at 1,200 x 6,000dpi, while color copying and scanning resolutions are 600 x 1,200dpi and 600 x 2,400dpi (optical), respectively.

Home office users will appreciate the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) which can feed multiple pages into the box for copying and scanning. No fax capabilities, though.

The DCP-120C uses four ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow). While this means you need only replace whichever tank runs out, you'd have to make more trips if the cartridges run out at different times, unless you already have a second set of inks on standby.

The Brother DCP-120C was launched in December, 2005 and new models have since been added to the lineup. The DCP-130C was announced in a local launch recently and the new inkbox touts faster print speeds and 1.5 picoliter (pl) ink droplet technology.
