NEC's new media desktops and tough laptop

By Darius Chang

SINGAPORE--NEC today strengthened its offering in the digital home entertainment arena, while introducing its toughest business laptop to date for the corporate traveler.

One of the pitfalls of having multiple desktops and laptops in the home is that your digital content tends to be haphazardly located. You may have holiday photos in your notebook, while your movie backups and personal video clips are usually found in the larger storage space of your PC. NEC's solution is the PowerMate X desktop series, which sees itself as a private media server that allows digital content to be shared across multiple machines.

NEC PowerMate X series

Besides the wired and wireless network-sharing capabilities, the PowerMate X has one special trick up its sleeve. Just under the optical drive is a slot which holds a removable USB-compatible harddisk. This makes it simple to move essential data around as well as simplifies file transfer between PCs. Though this feature is not new in the market (the HP Media Drive system works on the same principle), moving digital content is much faster via the USB protocol compared with Ethernet or Wi-Fi methods. Away from home, you can use the bundled software to access PowerMate X files through the Internet.

There are three models in this range, all of which sports a hybrid TV tuner card capable of streaming analog and digital programs. This also allows the PowerMate X to record TV programs. There is a dual video output option which allows hooking up to HDMI or DVI displays via an adaptor. The top-of-the-line unit--the PowerMate X9320--is decked out with a Core 2 Quad processor, Blu-ray as well as DVD Super Multi optical drives and a huge 2TB worth of storage capacity (spread over four 500GB drives). The midrange Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT graphics engine may not win any speed races, but for most games and entertainment purposes it should more than suffice. The midrange PowerMate X8820 tones down the storage to 500GB and takes away the Blu-ray drive. The low-end PowerMate X8620 offers a Core 2 Duo processor and an Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT video card.

The PowerMate X series will be available at the end of June across Asia.

NEC PowerMate V series

This series comprises value desktop offerings from the Japanese maker. Claiming to be a designer series, it may look pretty but isn't really as innovative as the finalists in Microsoft's Next-Gen competition. The PowerMate V's claim to fame is a low operating noise of 30 decibels, equal to a quiet whisper and 10 decibels below the environment of a quiet office.

The four models in this lineup start with the high-end PowerMate V7320, which sports a Core 2 Quad processor and midrange Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT graphics card. The midrange PowerMate V6320 and V1320 hold dual-core Intel chips and Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS video engines, while the entry-level PowerMate V1220 uses Intel's integrated graphics solution and drops the operating system from Vista Home Premium to Home Basic Edition.

Prices have yet to be confirmed, but the units will start shipping in Asia at the end of June.
