HP showcases quad-core Pavilion Elite

By Darius Chang

SINGAPORE--At the old Supreme Court today, HP showcased a new quad-core desktop and a duo of LCD displays.

Truth be told, we were a little disappointed that the HP Blackbird 002 did not make it to Asia shores. However, the HP Pavilion Elite m9000 survived the swim and was introduced to regional journalists along with the 22-inch HP w2207h and 24-inch w2408h LCD monitors.

Unlike the makeover given to its laptops, the design of the Pavilion Elite m9000 does not differ much from previous desktop offerings by the US maker. But it's under the hood that impresses. The new machine is based on Intel's 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad chip and Nvidia GeForce 8600GT video chipset. Hardcore gamers may be disappointed that the faster Nvidia 8800 graphics card was not included instead, but for the casual gamer and high-definition videos the 8600GT will more than suffice. What really makes a difference for this desktop is the option for a dual-format Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive that can handle all current optical standards to date. With this, consumers no longer have to decide which format to support and can purchase the latest high-definition movies easily. But if free-to-air broadcast is more your thing, a TV tuner is available as well to allow you to view real-time shows or record your favorite channels on the huge 1TB storage space.

In a bid to reduce clutter on your table, the latest LCD monitors from HP offers HDMI input and VGA, leaving those with S-video systems out of luck. The widescreen transflective displays are available in 22-inch or 24-inch sizes, with the latter offering higher resolutions and brightness. Notable features include an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness based on the environment, built-in USB ports and a height-adjustable stand which swivels, rotates and tilts. The borders of the panel are not wasted as one can add HP Easy Clip accessories like photo holders, headset holders, etc., easily.

The Pavilion Elite m9000 and LCD panels are available in Asia Pacific from this month. The country-specific configuration for the Pavilion Elite will be announced at a later date.
