Grado SR 60
What to expect:
Featuring a retro design and minimalist styling, the Grado SR 60 is reminiscent of those old radio headsets used during World War II. These cans may not score high in the functionality stakes, but for build quality and sheer sonic pedigree, they are quite hard to beat. Simple in design, the SR 60 is nevertheless solidly built, with an adjustable swivel headband that clamps tightly along your head. But the hard foam pads are distinctly uncomfortable and pinch your ear; we wouldn't recommend the SR 60 for extended outdoor listening sessions, especially on a warm afternoon.

Turn on the music, however, and the design quirks are easily forgiven. Although the SR 60 has a tendency towards bass, the general effect is articulate and the midrange lacks coloration. The sound is bass strong and energetic--tracks are delivered with great clarity and verve. From rock to metal, the Grado breezed though our listening tests with ease. Even notoriously difficult low-end material such as Grand Theft Audio's Death to the Infidels is delivered with delightful fervor.

Despite a lack for basic comfort, the Grado SR 60's upfront personality still makes it a serious audiophile alternative for mobile music lovers, especially headbangers.
