Lenovo launches new laptops and Ion-based Netbook

By Darius Chang

Lenovo adds three new machines to its laptop lineup today, addressing three distinct user groups. But instead of mere upgrades, the latest additions introduce the Intel Core 2 Duo CULV processor and Nvidia Ion platform to its stable.

The IdeaPad U350 sports an interesting design on its silver lid.
The IdeaPad U350 is an upgrade to the IdeaPad U330 and sports a slim and light 1.6kg chassis with a 13.3-inch display. This is the first Lenovo laptop to use the new Core 2 Duo CULV processor that offers power and cost savings, though it sits on a lower performance bracket compared with its full-powered siblings. Targeting the consumer entertainment crowd, this model sports multimedia features such as a 16:9 aspect ratio LED-backlit display, HDMI output and a Dolby-compatible audio system. Like the rest of its IdeaPad cousins, this machine comes with the VeriFace technology that allows the user to login using facial recognition. Other features include an ambient light sensor, Active Protection System which protects the harddisk platters during a drop, and the OneKey Rescue System.

The Lenovo G550 is the first G model to come with a 15.6-inch widescreen. Targeting the entry-level corporate user, this laptop also comes with consumer features such as a 16:9 aspect ratio screen and VeriFace technology as its likely to be used for personal entertainment as well. Coming in at a lower price point however, means it will not have the same hardy chassis and warranty support as the ThinkPad series. Based on Intel's Centrino 2 platform, the G550 provides a choice of integrated or Nvidia graphics chipset.

Lenovo claims its upcoming IdeaPad S12 is the first Netbook to use Nvidia's Ion platform (the latter has been showcased mainly on Mobile Internet Devices). This allows the low-cost machine to run 1080p video smoothly, an impressive feat considering the current crop of Atom-based Netbooks stutter when faced with a mere 720p movie. The IdeaPad S12 is also the third minilaptop from a major vendor to come with a 12.1-inch display, the others being the Dell Mini 12 and Samsung NC20.

To take advantage of its 1080p rendering capability, some configurations sport an HDMI port for hooking up with external displays. Other features include a 6-hour uptime (on the six-cell battery), VeriFace technology, OneKey Rescue System, HSDPA connectivity and an ExpressCard slot. One feature we particular like is the Lenovo Quick Start environment. This allows the unit to bypass the Windows operating system for quick bootup to Linux platform for Internet connection and emails. The latter also saves significant power compared with Microsoft's OS.

All three machines are slated for an appearance in retail stores from June.
