How to select the right Fujitsu laptop

By Darius Chang

Fujitsu has always been known for making quality machines that are exceptionally reliable. Though its notebooks are not as tough as ThinkPads or Panasonic ToughBooks, LifeBooks are nonetheless quite hardy and exceptionally slim and light. In fact, though the LifeBook S7000 series design is several years old, it can still hold its own as one of the sleekest 14.1-inch laptops in the market.

Even before the age of Netbooks, Fujitsu had its own vision of a minilaptop in the guise of the LifeBook P1000 back in 2003. Granted the Transmeta Crusoe processor was no powerhouse even back then, with its 10.6-inch display, small footprint and ability to run Windows 98, it was the epitome of portability in its time. Subsequently, the P series has evolved into two models--a convertible tablet PC with an equally portable form factor and a 12.1-inch ultraportable.

Fujitsu LifeBooks target the business professional. As such, security features such as a biometric fingerprint sensor and TPM security chip are standard on most models. Trademark features include a spill-resistant keyboard and three-year warranty, which are offered on almost all Fujitsu models. The Japanese company also has one of the widest range of tablet PC and HSDPA-enabled notebooks among big-name vendors.

Though it does not go for exotic materials or imprint designs, that doesn't mean that Fujitsu machines are boring boxes. The LifeBook U series is possible the smallest convertible tablet PC in the market, while its Netbook range was one of the first to sport clip-on covers. The LifeBook S6410 and S6510 have one of the smallest footprints in their respective categories, thanks to the SlimEdge design that significantly reduces the screen bezel.

They are not cheap, but Fujitsu's reliability and generous three-year coverage make its laptops a good choice for those looking for a solid business portable that will last them several years. Check out which model best suits your needs in the following pages.
