How to select the right BenQ laptop

By Darius Chang

Introduction

BenQ's laptops have, in our opinion, been underrated. They compete with the likes of Dell and Acer for the budget-conscious market, yet manage to offer machines which impress with style and performance. Not only does this Taiwanese brand offer color options, it also includes imprint designs a la HP Pavilion laptops. BenQ manages to keep even its gaming-grade machines really affordable.

It may surprise some people that the Taiwan vendor was originally established as a subsidiary of Acer in 1984 and spun off only in 2006. It's name is actually an acronym which stands for Bringing Enjoyment aNd Quality to life. In terms of product offering, the company focuses mainly on consumer and entertainment-oriented models at an affordable price, though choices are limited to a handful of JoyBook laptops.

Despite this, BenQ often tries to bring something extra to the table. It is one of the few to offer a secondary Windows SideShow display on its Q series. The S40 models are also exceptional as they somehow managed to fit a high-end Nvidia graphics chip in a thin-and-light form factor. JoyBooks also deserve special mention for the lamination process of the top covers that offers scratch resistance. Though they target the budget-conscious market, BenQ JoyBooks actually offer quite good value for money.
