Sony VAIO VGN-CR35G (Core 2 Duo T8100 Processor 2.1GHz, 2GB RAM)
Outlook
The Japanese giant has taken a page out of Mikey D.'s book and started coloring its notebooks, offering red, blue, white, pink and black flavors. If you're into pretentious marketing terms, that's Blazing Red, Indigo blue, Pure White, Luxury Pink and, er, Black, respectively. But this budget portable from Sony is not only a looker, it also performs surprisingly well, thanks to its discrete graphics chipset.

Lenovo Y410 (Core 2 Duo T7100 processor 1.8GHz; 1GB RAM)
Outrlook
After buying over IBM's PC department, Lenovo expanded its range of notebooks to reflect the needs of those who do not require the premium support of the ThinkPad series. The Lenovo 3000 C, N and V series are portables targeting small and medium business (SMB) users, while the Lenovo Y range is aimed at the consumer market. For a portable entertainment notebook, the Y410 is certainly attractive at a starting price of S$1,599 (US$1,177.27), one which only models like Acer Aspire 4710 and Dell Inspiron 1420 with far less features can compete.

HP 520 (Core Duo T2050 Processor 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM)
Outlook
The HP 520 was designed for the budget business user in mind, though we expect its low price will also attract more than its fair share of home users as well. Though the Core Duo chipset is several generations behind, the Windows Vista Business operating system is definitely in step with the times.

CNET Asia rating: 8.1 out of 10
The good: Excellent gaming performance; touch-sensitive buttons; slim and light for a midsize machine; good feature set which includes a fingerprint sensor; mini-remote control that stores in the ExpressCard slot.
The bad: No subwoofer; few USB ports; no modem.
The bottom line: Don't let the slim design and relatively light heft fool you. This XPS is one powerful gaming portable with an impressive feature set for work and play.

CNET Asia rating: 8.6 out of 10
The good: Great value; three USB ports; design.
The bad: Cramped keyboard; lack of storage space; no optical drive.
