HP notebooks undergo a makeover

By Darius Chang

Editors' note:

HP has revised its pricing on the Pavilion dv2600 and dv6500 models. The article has been updated to reflect these changes.

SINGAPORE--At the Art House today, HP launched a trio of consumer notebooks with distinctive designs that stand out from a sea of solid-color notebooks.

Dell and Sony may have started offering different shade options with their new notebook lines, but HP did not follow this path. Instead, it stuck with a single-tone theme but added a novel touch. The HP Imprint Verve, Influx and Trace designs are found on the HP Pavilion dv2600, Pavilion dv6500 and Compaq Presario B1200 laptops, respectively. So instead of a rainbow of colors, the Palo Alto's new offerings resemble silk-screened pieces of art.

But looks aside, there is really little else to expect under the hood. The HP Pavilion models are based on the Intel 965PM chipsets with discrete Nvidia GeForce 8400M video cards. As part of the US maker's entertainment lineup, the 14.1-inch dv2600 and 15.4-inch dv6500 incorporate built-in Webcams, touch-sensitive multimedia controls as well as mini-remote controls that can be stored in the ExpressCard slots. Though fingerprint biometric sensors are also part of the package. However, without a hardware TPM security chip to store passwords on, we advise users not to treat the fingerprint scanner as a strong security tool but rather as a simple method to login.

The Compaq Presario B1200 is a little of an abnormality. After all, the first of the 12.1-inch series was the B1800, followed by the B1900. The B1200 is a performance portable targeted at users who need a system primarily for work. As such, it eschews extras like Altec Lansing speakers and a mini-remote control, leaving only a Webcam and touch-sensitive multimedia control bar for the occasional video or music playback. In return, this 12.1-inch system puts in a water-resistant keyboard so the occasional spill does not spell disaster.

All three units will be available in Asia Pacific from this month on, with country-specific configurations to be confirmed at a later date.
