LG P300 (Core 2 Duo T9300 Processor 2.5GHz, 2GB RAM)
Network connectivity is handled through the Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth radios. A modem is not included, though only business travelers who rely on their laptops as a fax machine may miss it. The 5-in-1 card reader handles SD/SDHC/MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD-Picture Card formats.
For a portable targeting business users, security features like biometric fingerprint sensors, TPM security chip and SmartCard reader are surprisingly missing. Should the LG P300 be used for work it is highly unadvisable to store sensitive company information on the system without third-party security solutions. In any case, care must be taken when commuting with this laptops as its harddisk does not have shock protection. We would also have liked to see an HSDPA radio included for mobile broadband.
One of the few compromises when running a powerful graphics card in a slim machine is the amount of heat generated. The unit runs hot even when performing nothing more strenuous than productivity applications. Gaming on the machine brings it to new highs, so don't even think about leaving it on your lap when raiding in World of Warcraft.
Performance And Battery Life
When it comes to performance, the LG P300 pulled no punches. It uses the latest Penryn Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz processor with 2GB of memory and 1GB of Intel Turbo Memory. For S$3,799 (US$2,579.09), you also get a 250GB SATA harddisk. The Windows Vista Business Edition reported a score of 5.0 on the Windows Experience Index, hence it's suitable for almost any computing task you can throw at it. The 3DMark06 result of 2,483 makes this a suitable gaming machine. In fact, we managed to complete Crysis on this thin-and-light running at medium textures and settings. The fact that a machine this light can give acceptable frame rates on such a demanding game is impressive, to say the least. But let's be realistic. For every give, there must be a take. The six-cell battery provides an uptime of around 2 hours while playing a DVD on the external drive with half-screen brightness. Using the P300 for normal productivity tasks should increase battery life. Unfortunately, there is no high-capacity option available for this machine.
Service And Support
LG notebooks come with a one-year international warranty. On its support Web site, you can download user manuals and device drivers. However, there is no knowledge database or comprehensive FAQ for self-diagnosis. There is also no telephone technical support and only a hotline number is given for basic enquiries. In case of hardware failure, the unit should be brought to a service center for repair. It is unfortunate that the number of service centers, of which there's only one location in Singapore, is found lacking. Overall, there is much room for improvement when it comes to LG's technical support.Sponsored links
