Sony VAIO VGN-FJ78GP (Pentium M 760 Processor 2.0GHz, 512MB RAM)
Available in four colors, the VAIO VGN-FJ series is Sony's entry-level portable: Hence, it lacks some of the bells and whistles from its higher-end siblings. In the era of mobile dual-core processing, the Pentium M chip found inside this notebook may soon show its age, especially when one tries to run the upcoming Windows Vista operating system next year. However, its price and build quality make the VAIO VGN-FJ78GP one of the more affordable premium-brand notebooks in the market, if you can overlook the outdated platform.
Upside: At only 33mm thin and 2.4kg with battery, the VAIO VGN-FJ78GP delights mobile users with the ease in portability. For a light-weight notebook, users will be able to experience a widescreen effect on the 14.1-inch display.
Business users can choose to have it in stylish onyx black which fits in nicely with the business look and students can pick from the more happening colors like pearl white, raspberry red and sky blue.
With three USB ports on the notebook, users can be reassured they will not run out of USB ports for their external drives, mouse and more. Wireless LAN is also available on the VAIO VGN-FJ78GP, allowing users to work on or surf the Internet leisurely anytime, anyplace.
The integrated Webcam is protected by a small rectangular glass panel, giving it a stylish look that fits in with the notebook’s sleek design. The Webcam and mic make videoconferencing a breeze. Offsite presentations and project group meetings are made easier with this function.
For S$2,499 (US$1,696.54), this notebook is affordable for the basic user, especially the student.
Downside: The VAIO VGN-FJ78GP is not a powerhouse as it runs only on a Pentium M processor. Even though the processor is just nice for the basic users, with the availability of Core Duo processors in the market, it makes this notebook unappealing to prospective buyers.
With only an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 graphics card, the notebook is not for hardcore gamers. Both the graphics card and processor will not be able to support advanced 3D gaming.
Bluetooth connectivity is not available on this notebook and this makes it less attractive to users with the widespread use of Bluetooth on mobile phones and notebooks.
The one-year limited warranty is also not attractive enough for many users.
Outlook: The VAIO VGN-FJ78GP is reasonably priced at S$2,499 (US$1,696.54), offering excellent design and basic technology for most people. Both business users and students will find this notebook a joy to satisfy their basic needs in technology and quench their thirst for style.
