NEC's latest member of the Versa line will have one of the brightest screens in the market. A desktop replacement, the notebook will have enough ports and expansion, including legacy ports, to meet the needs of business users. Though it is not targeted at gamers, the ATI Radeon Xpress chipset should be sufficient for older games if you are not too particular about the frame rate. This notebook will be launched during the upcoming COMEX, an event which showcases the latest IT products.

Upside: This desktop replacement has one of the better screens that we have seen. Though the exterior seems rather drab, the stylish interior uses a blue LED light around the power button and a panel of mirror-finished "quick-play" buttons at the top. By including serial and parallel ports, users with older peripherals (parallel port printers, serial barcode scanners, etc) may want to consider this machine. There is also an option to replace the TV tuner with a floppy disk drive.
The addition of a TV tuner and a DVD writer, in conjunction with its excellent screen, means you can throw out that TV and DVD player taking up space in the bedroom.
Downside: Even though it's a desktop replacement, it is rather hefty at about 3.6kg. By going with an integrated ATI Radeon graphics chipset,
the Versa E6100 will not appeal to gamers looking for a dedicated graphics card to play the latest shooter. The lack of a pre-boot function means the machine has to boot into Windows for the TV and DVD to work. This is an oversight which hinders its use as a multimedia device.
Outlook: Basically an upgraded version of the Versa E6000, the addition of a better screen and TV tuner may just make this model appeal to non-gamers looking for a all-in-one machine. However, since it's a multimedia notebook we expected it to include a remote control and be able to play CDs without having to boot into Windows.
