User Review for MSI Wind U100 (Intel Atom N270 processor 1.6GHz; 2GB)
Best deal ever
Mar 2, 2009Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: I got mine for $250 U.S. dollars, included bluetooth, 120 gb HDD, 1 gb ram, 10 inch screen, webcam, over and underclocking processor and very cheap
Cons: Touch pad is not in the very middle of netbook, one button for both left and right click, batt life, ctrl and fn buttons in the wrong place, Screen resolution is not high enough, no integrated 3g, speakers are terriible
Opinion:
Yes, it does look like I have a lot of cons for my netbook, but I am actually very happy about this product. I thought it would be a slow, crappy laptop that would collect dust soon, but I was surprised to see how decent this laptop, excuse me, netbook was at performing everything my normal computer does at practiically the same speed. Well, it took some time to update the software and bios and I got scared of updating my bios, because it could brick the laptop at any time it messes up. There is a solution if you mess up updating the bios that would let you revert back to your old one if this happens. I didnÂ’t install any anti-virus software because I thought it would cause performance issues and I thought that if a major virus destroys the data in the laptop, it woiuld be over because there isnÂ’t a cd drivwe inside. There is also a solution to this too. There is a hidden partition located in the hard drive that contains all the setup files to reinstall xp when starting up the computer. One thing that annoyed me the most was the location of the touch pad. It wasnÂ’t in the very middle of the netbook so I couldnÂ’t use it in the dark or else I would be in the scrolling zone of the touch pad and clicking the right click instead of the left. What also really annoys me is that the Fn and the Ctrl keys are switched in the key board so I press the wrong buttons when I want to do something. There is a solution to this problem and that is a hack I believe whee you can switch these buttons with each other. There seems to be a bad balance in the computer when you tilt the lid all the way back. I tilt it back to see the whole screen better, but then the whole laptop tits in the front. I donÂ’t know if this is solved with a 6 cell or not but it can also be annoying. Speaking of battery life, It is as other people say. ItÂ’s pretty bad, but there are lots of solutions for this. There is a 6 cell battery availanle and even a 9 cell battery that is sold by an unauthorized dealer and they will boost the battery life by a considerably large amount. You can also underclock the system to 800mhz by a press of a button and I bet that will also helpvout. You can really tell the difference when the system is underclocked because that is when it really is impossible to multitask. One of my most favorite features is the option of overclocking the computer by 8, or 20 percent. I bet this will give me the extra juice I need for demanding tasks like HD videos and encoding, but I donÂ’t recommend doing these on any netbook, because encoding would take too long to do and theres no point in waching HD videos on a tiny display of a low resolution. Speaking of the display, I have a 10 inch display that 1000 By 600. Not bad, but sometimes I wished it were a higher resolution when I have to constantly scroll side to side on some web pages. Makes me wish I had the hp 2140 or the dell mini 10 with the high resolution display. More about the hardware. It has 1 gb of internal ram thatÂ’s embedded in the board, which leaves an open slot for an extra gig of ram. Be aware that upgrading ram could void your warranty. I do know that the motherboard only supports up to 2 gb of ram, so if your ram is more than 1 gbb, than the computer will not turn on. I do hear that the overclocking has more stable results if you add more high quality ram. The hard disk comes with 3 partitions on it. One is the hidden setup partition, one with the actual xp files and another for whatever you want. I hear that it is more efficient with multiple partitions, meaning a faster system. I also heard that if you turn ff indexing, you could get a faster system also. Plus if you restore your xp files with the recovery partition, then only one will be erased and the ther intact. The speakers are terrible, they sound absolutely dreadful when listening to music, but there is a quick fix fr this. Included in the laptop is a program that controls the sound drivers and if you select the preset bass, then there will instantly be more clarity to your sound. Last but not least is the keyboard. How is it? I typed this whole review on this tiny keyboard and I am not proofreading this to let you know the accuracy to this keyboard. There are some typos herre and there and it took me like 10 times longer to type this review because I had to start looking at the keyboard while typing. Yes it does take some time to get used to. I didnÂ’t even tell you the best part yet. Well actually I have. The Cost! Oh my god I got this on sale a microcenter for $230, $250 with tax, but it got me this terrific computer at such a bargain price. It was refurbrished though, but I know for a fact that it was an open-box sale, so it couldnÂ’t be so bad. This was an impulse buy and I was not disappointed one bit. I am thinking about making this my primary computer for all my tasks because I donÂ’t do much on a laptop and its pretty fast and very portable. Perfect for a college student such as myself.
I can't believe you read my whole review, but there are a lot of tips in there if you get msi wind u100 that took me quite a few hours to research.
