First Take

By John Chan

Taiwan-based company Luxpro gained infamy when it introduced the Super Shuffle, an MP3 player that looked exactly the same as the Apple iPod shuffle but with more features thrown in. Its current product, the Luxpro iOta bears nothing more than a passing resemblance to the current crop of iPod nano players. So now, we can focus less on the juicy lawsuits, and more on the MP3 player itself. ...

It's working again

Rating: 10 out of 10 (Perfect)
Pros: compact, good sound quality, good user interface, good battery life, price
Cons: the screen could be a bit bigger for viewing videos
Opinion:
After exchanging several emails with Luxpro tech support, they werre able to guide me to the correct firmware version to install, and the unit is fully functional again. Still no idea why it failed, but reloading the firmware did fix it.
The unit is not 'perfect' as indicated by the 10 rating in this review, but 10 here should bring up the average with my earlier low rating to about where it should be - all things considered, including the good support with this issue, I think the unit deserves a rating of 7-8.

they are finally responding to my emails

Rating: 3 out of 10 (Poor)
Pros: compact, good sound quality
Cons: service when it fails

Still no constructive suggestion to resolve the problem, but at least they have responded now, so we are moving forward...

Rating: 1 out of 10 (Abysmal)
Pros: Compact, good sound quality, includes FM and video
Cons: NO SUPPORT when it quits working.
Opinion:
I had the iOta for about 5 months before it quit. During that time there were a few occasions where it 'locked up' and I had to push the reset button to clear it. No problem as none of my files were lost. Then one day I made the mistake of trying to turn it off while it was changing songs. After that the screen would display the name LUXPRO but nothing else. Pressing reset, even reloading the firmware download from the website did nothing, in fact now it plays music, but the screen is a single bright line across the bottom. It's supposedly still under 1 year warranty.
BUT THE BIG PROBLEM is that there is NO SUPPORT from Luxpro on this - - the only phone number they list is in Taiwan - no US service location listed, and after several emails to their support website to ask about service I am still not ... Read more
