Sony NW-E016 (4GB)
First Take
As if releasing a delicious video Walkman wasn't enough, Sony has built another compact and smart-looking MP3 player. The NW-E01x series is a range of ultra-slim and sporty players, with 30 hours of battery life from a 1-hour charge and the same audio-enhancement tech that delivered cracking playback on the NW-A808. ...

There are alternatives to SS
Oct 24, 2007Rating: 8 out of 10 (Excellent)
Pros: Great sound quality, nice design, good battery endurance, supports WMA and AAC (not protected)
Cons: the horrible and dumb Sonic Stage, can't delete files from the device itself, can't create playlists in the device itself
Opinion:
A great device indeed, great sound, clear and smart interface, a lot of sound and play modes, the option to made your own 5 band EQ, and others interesting features built in a small, nice and well design piece of hardware. BUT the PC software to manage the music is without a doubt one of the worst softwares I had manipulated. To many headaches to transfer music, to and from the player. The organization system of Sonicstage is just sick and exasperating. The software demands a lot of CPU resources, is buggy, hard to figure it out and got a poor and cheap interface that complicates to find the songs and create playlists. I almost return the device cuz deal with the software was a pain in the...well, you know. Hopefully, there are alternatives to Sonicstage (developed by users of the player)such "ML_SONY" (a plugin for winamp) or NW-E00X MP3 FM and VOIDMP3FM ("drag&drop" like interfaces that must be copied ... Wonderful purchase
Sep 12, 2007Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Immense sound quality
Cons: Needs Sony propriety Windows only software to transfer files
Opinion:
Only bought this to try it out whilst I was in Singapore. However, it is my loyal iRiver which has found itself on eBay instead. Awesome little player.
The Sony software to transfer the files is a little clunky although nowhere near as bad as indicated in other reviews on this site. Maybe I am a little biased since I am well-versed in how to get the best out of it going back to my Net Minidisc days.
The device itself is a joy. The sound quality playing back ATRAC3 encoded files (which I had been led to believe was inferior to mp3 in blind tests) is truly stunning. An album compressed to about 40Mb sounds crisp and warm. The MP3 playback is very nice. There is no perceptible noise on the signal. There are 3 fully configurable graphic settings for the tone which is a real bonus for me since my CX300 are normally overloaded with bass ... Read more
beautiful hardware, terrible software
Aug 1, 2007Rating: 8 out of 10 (Excellent)
Pros: a pleasure to use
Cons: terrible On Stage software
Opinion:
really happy with the whole thing even though the On Stage software is frustrating. also the storage of tracks in ATRAC format which can't be converted back to MP3 is really bad. all said and done, i'm really happy with this player.
