In-ear headphones for bass heads

By Kelvin Low, CNET Asia

Stock earphones that come with MP3 players usually sound horrid. Even those who don't mind using stock earphones will discover that because of their open-back design, noise gets in and the bass is usually non-present. That may be fine if you can live with your music mixed with the ambient sounds around you. But for those who want to hear their tunes in every detail with extra punch in their music, look no further than these boomy in-ear headphones that we've rounded up.

Frequency response indicates the range of sounds a particular headphone can produce, but take manufacturer's claims with a pinch of salt. Audible bass ranges from 150Hz to as low as 16Hz, but any sound below 20Hz is usually felt rather than heard.

1.  Beyerdynamic DTX-50

This set has a very strong bass response and is thus recommended if you like to listen to the electronica genre. The downside is that it does not handle higher notes well, and there's a lack of clarity for melodies and vocals.

2.  Sennheiser IE 8

Sennheiser's flagship in-ear headphones feature a manual bass response tuning knob for the user to choose the amount of bass response from these cans. It also features a very good sound stage comparable with full-sized headphones and a warm sound signature. The drawback is that high-end notes tend to sound slightly muffled.

3.  Sleek Audio SA6

Like the CrossRoads MylarOne Quattro we reviewed, the SA6 features a Variable Equalization (VQ) System that allows users to alter the sound signature by fitting it with different port adapters. Also, these headphones feature interchangeable cables for extra customization. Overall, the SA6 provides a well-balanced sound signature with punchy bass when the Bass+ port adapter is used.

4.  Future Sonics Atrio

Going big and deep on bass, this has a very warm-sounding midrange. The strong low-end performance makes these headphones sound "meaty". However, due to the strong presence of the low end, the high end may come across as slightly dull or drowned out. This is bundled with double-flanged ear tips for better noise isolation.

5.  Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5eb

The defining feature of this offering is its twin driver configuration, a subwoofer and a mid- to high-range driver. This avoids the problem of relying on one single driver to deliver the entire frequency range. The result of this setup is that these in-ears deliver clear mid and high notes without being drowned out by the heavy bass response.
