A rogue gallery of oddball MP3 players

By Kelvin Low, CNET Asia

MP3 players have revolutionized the way we listen to music on-the-go in the same way the Sony Walkman changed the way people listen to music. More than 10 years after the first mass-produced Elger Labs MPMan F10, we are now looking at an astonishing variety of players in the market today. Many modern units feature up to 32GB storage capacity, hours of battery life, wireless connectivity and video playback, but we've taken a look at the other end of the scale: The weird, strange and the bizarre.

1.  The Cassette MP3 Player

Mating new technology with an obsolete format, the cassette MP3 player will play today's MP3 music with any standard cassette player. Some models also function as a standalone MP3 player. While earlier offerings came with built-in memory, later introductions such as the one that Chinavasion stocks feature an SD card slot that will take up to 8GB cards.

2.  Taser gun holster MP3 player

The Taser stun gun is used by police and security forces worldwide. That said, it didn't take long to introduce a gun holster with a 1GB MP3 player built-in. While not a dedicated digital music device, name us any gadget that plays music and delivers a stunning 50,000 volts into the crook who's going to mug you around the next corner. The effective firing range is 4.5m so you can shock someone from a relatively safe distance.

3.  Victorinox s.beat

Integrating a 1/2GB MP3 player into a Swiss Army Knife is a relatively good idea. While it's useful for the "urban survivor", those who end up in the true wilderness may find themselves under-equipped. The s.beat comes with a knife blade, a nail file and screw driver combination, a pair of scissors, a retractable ballpoint pen, an LED mini light and a key ring. There's even a remote control, shaped as the Victorinox logo.

4.  Brick MP3 Player

This brick-styled MP3 player is offered in five different colors and supports microSD flash memory up to 2GB in size. (Does it remind you of theKube?) More than that, the five circular buttons rise well over the surface of the player, giving this that distinctive Lego look. Just be careful not to drop it into a box of Lego bricks. You'll have a hard time finding it.

5.  Victor-JVC XA-AW33

The XA-AW33 boasts waterproof capability as well as being able to float. No other rubber duckie allows you to enjoy your favorite tunes when lounging in a bathtub. The XA-AW33 features a special speaker designed by NXT and a pale-blue lamp to illuminate the bath tub. The 256MB capacity may be tiny, but you get up to 15 hours of playback, which is much longer than your average bath time.
