Remember the "good" old days when pocket MP3 players were a sorry bunch of singing plastic boxes with a monochrome screen? Well, times have changed.

The latest crop of tiny audio players can now hold a bucketful of bells and whistles in addition to carrying a tune. Some can even show some video and play a few games. It would seem that small doesn't necessarily means less these days.

1.  Cowon iAudio D2 (4GB)

The good:  Good touchscreen implementation; long battery life; fast transfer speed; expansion card slot; supports up to 4GB SD card.
The bad:  Scratchy radio reception on certain stations; slight lag during picture viewing.
The bottom line: The D2 is a great portable video player for those looking for a PDA-like interface. It's a brilliant performer and should satisfy most users.

2.  Samsung YP-T9 (4GB)

The good:  User-friendly interface; video playback; gaming capabilities; impressive battery life.
The bad:  Processor is slow; side buttons take some getting used to; proprietary USB port.
The bottom line: Despite a few minor issues, the stylish Samsung YP-T9 is a no-brainer: It's easy to use, packed with features, and sounds fantastic. What more could you ask for?

The good:  Noise-canceling functionality; elegant design; fast charging; solid battery life.
The bad:  Bulky earphones; display cannot be reoriented; requires SonicStage for music transfers.
The bottom line: Solid in all aspects, Sony has churned out a winner in the form of this feature-packed noise-canceling player.

The good:  Video playback; excellent video-conversion software; solid sound quality and performance.
The bad:  Pricey; no DRM support; video playback is limited to 15 frames per second; difficult to navigate interface; too tiny screen for photos and video.
The bottom line: The feature-packed and swell-sounding Cowon iAudio U3 may ooze cool as one of the smallest PVPs, but its lack of DRM support, its somewhat tricky controls, and its high price tag spoil the party.

The good:  Unique and stylish design with a built-in, slide-out speaker; stunning interface; FM radio and cool visual effects; excellent sound quality; included earbuds are decent.
The bad:  On the large and heavy side for a flash player; the touch controls take some getting used to; display could be bigger.
The bottom line: The Samsung YP-K5 is a unique MP3 player with a fun interface and great sound quality; it may be bulky around the middle, but it's an excellent choice if you want to share your tunes at the drop of a dime.
