More to Samsung than Soul

BARCELONA, SPAIN--Samsung had earlier announced its flagship product last week in anticipation of the Mobile World Congress. The Soul is a mobile phone that represents the culmination of the Ultra Edition brand and is one that focuses on style, targeted at the high-end premium market. With MWC now off to a start, the Korean chaebol has taken the opportunity to reveal a number of other devices, divided into six categories--style, basic communication, connected, multimedia, infotainment and business.

Joining the Soul in the style category is the SGH-F480, a handset with very few buttons, which could be mistaken for the LG Prada phone. Though only 11.5mm thick, it has a QVGA touchscreen LCD, HSDPA connectivity and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and image stabilization.

In the basic communications category, the SGH-B100 was mentioned. Though most may consider it to be an unexciting offering, it's important as this model underscores the importance of the budget line to Samsung's business. Samsung Mobile has traditionally focused on the mid- to high-end markets. But if it is to maintain and strengthen its global number two position for mobile phone manufacturers, it has to gain more market share in the emerging markets, and the B100 will be part of that strategy. In June last year, Samsung also announced plans to expand its mobile phone production capacity in India, one of the world's fastest-growing cellular markets.

Moving on from the B100, sitting on the other end of the spectrum is the SGH-G810. This device runs the Symbian Series60 OS and has a 5-megapixel camera that's similar to the company's main imaging phone, the G800. Besides features like autofocus and 3x optical zoom, it also has an onboard Xenon flash for photography in low-light conditions and built-in GPS with geotagging support.

Those are just some of the highlights from the Korean company. The availability for all the devices is Q2, but that's a time frame which may vary from region to region. We are still awaiting response from Samsung on specific Asia-Pacific availability. Read on for more information on all the handsets.
