14 May 2007--As of today, the update to WM6 is still unavailable on O2's Web site or at its service centers. O2 has informed CNET Asia that this is due to a delay in the approval process with Microsoft. The company hopes to release the update before the end of the week, but was unable to be more specific about exactly which day this will occur.

Update: O2 is presently reviewing the Zinc for possible update to WM6. Aside from that, the company currently has no plans to upgrade other models launched before the Atom Life.

This free update will be available to all current Atom Life users, and will involve either a download from the O2 Web site or a visit to one of its service centers.

The upgrade will change the operating system on the Atom Life from Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition to Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) Professional. One significant improvement in WM6 is the ability to receive and send emails in HTML format.

Available from May 12, the Atom Life will become one of the first commercially-available Windows Mobile products to sport the newer OS. Atom Life handhelds sold in stores from June onwards will also be preloaded with WM6. In comparison, Dopod, which will be acquired by HTC, will be upgrading its selected devices to WM6 in July.

Furthermore, the enhancements in the O2 Atom Life like O2 SMS Plus and O2 MediaPlus have been tested on the new OS, and will still be available on the Atom Life after the upgrade.

In addition, O2 said it is testing WM6 on its upcoming Xda Flame as well, and that the rest of its products to be launched in 2007 will also sport the new OS.

At press time, O2 was not able to confirm if its other handhelds like the Zinc and Graphite would get the WM6 upgrade as well.
