First Take

By Damian Koh

The thing about QWERTY handhelds is they can be anal to use sometimes especially when the keys are not comfortably spaced apart or they don't provide tactile feedback for prolonged typing. Fortunately, Asus did that right for its first Windows Mobile 6 smart phone--the M530w. ...

Good - after firmware pudate

Rating: 7 out of 10 (Very good)
Pros: wm6
Cons: battery
Opinion:
Ok - an update on my review - i installed the firmware upgrae that is on the Asus website and the phones seems to work fine now. Battery life is still weak.

With all of the products coming out soon this price has dropped and its a deceent all-around device

disappointing

Rating: 4 out of 10 (Mediocre)
Pros: WM6, design, size
Cons: battery, phone abilities
Opinion:
Just migrated from a Dopod C720W to this device. i like the form factor and the price, but i have 2 big concerns

- battery life. if fully charged i don't think i can get 1 day's normal use out of it. I estimate the battery be good for 12 hrs standby. Eg. midnight at 60%, 9am under 10% WITH NO ACTIVITY over the night.. horrible by todays standards

- phone calls hang. I'm not sure how to describe ehat happends.. the phone is still operating and the call shows as active, but the connection (audio) fails. Need to turn phone off to sto pthe call.

This is the second unit i have had - the fisrt could not read my sim card (or the M1 staff that had helped me). i will try to replace this tomorrow.

Good connectivities at a price.

Rating: 6 out of 10 (Good)
Pros: Wifi, 3G and Design
Cons: Less Softwares bundled, short battery lifespan, 2MP Camera, Generally more expensive
Opinion:
Choosing ASUS as my first Smartphone was a tough decision as compared to others.

Major Drawbacks of the phone includes:
(1) Less built in applications than even to normal handphone (not even currency converter?);
(2) Short battery life - really really short life;
(3) The Camera is only at 2MP and the camera processing speed is very slow;
(4) not many goodies included in the retail box (no second battery, no memory card included);
(5) Other than Manual in various languages at their website, ther is no other applications that really developed inhouse for this phone; and
(6) Only 64mb RAM?

Pluses of this phone
(1) Wifi connection and 3G phone;and
(2) Slim design with reasonable tacktile keypad.

The rest of the pluses of this phone including reasonably fast processor, latest Version of WM as well as std port design can be easily outdone by the competition such as Motorola and Samsung. ... Read more
