First Take
When the O2 Orion was cancelled, the Dopod 577W stepped in as the first smartphone in Singapore running on Windows Mobile 5. With a form factor pioneered by the O2 Xphone II, Dopod's smartphone can easily replace an entry-level PDA. However, the position of the expansion slot leaves much to be desired. Priced at S$768 (US$551.92) without mobile phone contract, this handset will be available in Singapore stores this month.

Question

Pros: Can you just connect to any wi-fi router when using this phone?
Cons: If so, does that mean that you can surf at 802.11b speeds?
Opinion:
I know that you can connect to wi-fi using this phone, it's one of the reasons why I'm interested in buying it. However, I require some basic information.
1) Can I connect to the internet via a plain old wireless router; and will the speed be 802.11b (around 1 mb/s)?
2) If I connect to the internet via wi-fi, will my phone service charge me for data usage (excluding text, sms, and other messaging)? I mean, if I'm not using GSM/GPRS, then they can't charge me right? Basically, can I surf the internet for free when using wi-fi with a router?
Excellent PDA in phone form factor
May 26, 2006Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Fantastic Screen, almost exhaustive array of features, great form factor, excellent keypad
Cons: No touch screen, moody Bluetooth, poor Camera, no flash, lousy wired headset, not the best vibrator
Opinion:
Good bang for the buck. Takes convergence to another level...work, play, listen to music, watch video's / movies, use as a pleasant alarm clock (I havent used my iPod as an alarmclock, since I got this phone) - this phone does it all. And in a fantastic phone form factor - not a brick.
Might be a little daunting to do it all for the uninitiated though - needs some tinkerting to make it do things you want it to...and once you do - I dont see any other product at this point in time that does so much, for so little (in reletive terms, ofcourse).
The wishlist, however, would include a touch screen (and Win PPC) and support for a bigger miniSD.

Pros: Good design, well-spaced keyboard, good features
Cons: poor camera, bad battery life, cannot put 2GB MiniSD
Opinion:
It's a good phone but can anyone tell me is 1.3MP camera clear and can put 2GB miniSD into this phone. Please tell me now. How long the battery life is going to last?
