Google Android vs. iPhone, BlackBerry and WinMo

By Andrew Nusca

The Google Android mobile operating system currently runs on less than 2 percent of the world's smartphones, but research firm Gartner predicts the platform will grow to 14 percent of the global smartphone market in 2012--beating Apple's iPhone, Windows Mobile and RIM's BlackBerry platforms.

Computerworld notes that Android will pale only to the Symbian OS, installed mostly on Nokia devices. Nokia is the world's No. 1 phone manufacturer worldwide, and Symbian runs on about half of all smartphones.

Symbian's share will fall to 39 percent by 2012, Gartner predicts.

Here are five reasons why Android will beat iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile on the global stage, according to Gartner’s forecast:
  • Google backs Android, a major pipeline for its cloud services.
  • Android is improving rapidly. The Cupcake 1.5 release was well-received, and Donut 1.6 has already been sent over the air to handset owners.
  • Android is open, making it easier to quickly gain developers' support.
  • Android will run on phones from several manufacturers, which will help it quickly spread through the marketplace. HTC, Motorola and Samsung are already supporting handsets.
  • Android combines the best of what's out there. It's open, but it offers iPhone-like menus and apps, with Windows Mobile-esque icons, with Palm Pre-like multitasking. There's another arms race afoot--the battle among Android handset makers as to which company can squeeze the most out of the OS.

As reported by Computerworld, Gartner forecasts the following market share in 2012:
  • Symbian: 203 million handsets, 39 percent of the market;
  • Google Android: 76 million handsets, 14.5 percent of the market;
  • Apple iPhone OS: 71.5 million handsets, 13.7 percent of the market;
  • Windows Mobile: 66.8 million handsets, 12.8 percent of the market;
  • RIM BlackBerry OS: 65.25 million handsets, 12.5 percent of the market;
  • Linux variants: 28 million handsets, 5.4 percent of the market;
  • Palm webOS: 11 million handsets, 2.1 percent of the market.

The main takeaway: Android's the biggest gainer of the bunch, at the expense of RIM's BlackBerry OS.

(Remember: These are global figures, not the US market, which is dominated by the iPhone and BlackBerry OSes. Still, they indicate the rapid global growth of the smartphone segment.)

Which will you choose?

Android's early success is due to Googles infrastructure support & backing of the open(handset)alliance, where WinMo fails Android is taking its stride one flavourful(cupcake,donut,flan,what's next?) step at a time making it more suitable/robust for different hardware platforms; take into account the MIDs, smartbooks, & ebooks-reader concept..

Google puts their foot in very nook, but left many crannies untouched. Touch & Go will make a lot of people unhappy !!!

I want my Donut Now ... and Eclair next Jan !! No excuses i'll be glad to part with $29.99 for an update

I'm looking forward to see android take off, with more device at more reasonable price.

Manufacturer's attempt to market android as high end device, and charge buyer premium is going to scare user off, like window mobile did before (I think they're still doing it now).

Manufacturers should learn from nokia symbian, a unified platform/os for all range of product. That's how they (or maybe android only) can gain market fast.

I've been using my HTC Magic for some time now and it's a little buggy but it's working fine for me, current uptime stands at 405 h 30 mins. Quite stable, though the lack of a paid app store, i have many high quality free apps on my phone, including a very nice e-book reader, face book, twitter, tons of widgets, games and a very active pool of developer which response to e-mail about bugs in apps and pushes updates almost on a weekly basis.

I don't agree with what the writer has to say about it's win-mo-esque icons, because win-mo without HTC is plain ugly.... and the GUI on the android (out of the box) is much nicer and more iphone-ish if you ask me.

The reason why win-mo has lost it's foot hold in the market is simply due to its user un-friendly, non usable GUI. I don't quite understand the business model of Microsoft even with 6.5.

My only grip about owning an android powered phone in Singapore is the lack of support for it. No paid app store, no push update ( so far ) my malaysian friend has gotten his 1.6 update already.....

1 reasons Google Android will not beat windows mobile: Android can't transfer files between phones using bluetooth.

xiutian says...
@tricker667, now you can with a free app available on the Market. Name of app is Bluetooth File Transfer. No need to root the device for the app to work.

tricker667 says...
Thanks xiutian for the advice, i had search for the software as you suggested.I not very sure about the software is reliable. My 4 year old W800 can do bluetooth file transfer between phone and this latest HTC Hero can't, its simply unacceptable. I believe its about the Digital Right Management issues, but my concern is about transfering my phone contacts and sharing my pictures. I don't like the feeling of when i want to use a phone and end up holding back by this issue.

Anyway the shop agree to let me exchange to another phone :)
Now Android phones and iPhone will not be in my shopping list,until they can allow file transfer by bluetooth in factory default settings.

Android was never meant to be a complete software out of the box. It was meant for Geeks.

HTC + Android 1.6 and why we are not getting it...

Avin to HTC support via HTC.com
"hi, when will we get HTC Magic update to android 1.6 ?"

HTC to Avin
Thank you for contacting HTC.

With reference to your query, we are sorry that the 1.6 ROM upgrade patch for Magic is not available in Singapore at the moment. Currently we haven't been informed whether or when it would be released. We will forward this enquiry to our relative department for further improvement. We will try our best to improve our product feature in accordance with customers'expectations. Any progress, namely, patch or hot-fix related to this would released in www.htc.com

Again, we are sorry for the unhappiness and thank you for your consideration.

Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

We look forward to be at services to you again.

Avin wasn't satisfied with smoke bomb... decided to sent another e-mail
"Why is this so ? Malaysia has gotten the update."

HTC to Avin
Thank you for contacting HTC.

With regards to your query, kindly be noted that all products's post-sales support will have to be in accordance with its regional support policy. If you purchase this model in Singapore, all software support or warranty service needs to get update and support from Singapore. Usually, because the Tech-Dept is different from the region/country, the update or developed version of the HTC same model cannot be used on another region models because it will not be compatible.

Currently, we have not confirmed that Malaysian authorised service center or website support has released new ROM update. If you see any of the update of firmware news on non-HTC official website, that cannot be used because only firmware you download from HTC offficial website, your device can be properly upgraded and warranty will not be void.

Best regards.

If you are in Msia, and gotten 1.6, please update me... my friend in Msia had confirm that he is running 1.6 already.

Android 1.6 update now official for T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G (Via Engadget)
on 1st OCT

Lets see how long after we will get our updates

Still no 1.6 on my Magic while the world revel in eclair sweetness.

Some unconfirmed sources said Sense is coming to Magic users in Nov ( Taiwan has got it some time back ) Anyone tried flashing a chinese Sense on a SEA Magic ??

I'm more keen on Eclair then sense.... at least I know it will be faster...
A phone that gets you ?? Not really lah.... the apps in the phone makes the difference and with 10,000 apps (including paid apps which are not available in Singapore) These phones (android based) won't really get you lah....

Getting more disappointed with my Magic as the day grow by... It's almost a mediocre substitute for the iPhone.

I strongly think that is still the bench mark for experience.
Service + Network + Hardware + Software. No one can top this.
Not even big blue.
