My Phone and My Phone Premium

Aside from the free content backup service My Phone and mobile application store Windows Marketplace for Mobile services which were announced previously, a "lost phone" feature is also introduced with the My Phone Premium package today.

This new utility lets users locate their lost devices on a map, remote lock the handset, send push messages, override vibrate/silent profiles to sound an alarm, as well as perform remote data wipe.

The My Phone Premium pack will be available in Australia, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan in Asia Pacific at a recommended retail price of US$4.99, but is free from now until November 30. This is a seven-day ad-hoc service which can be downloaded from Windows Marketplace for Mobile and will let the user send three alarm messages, do one remote lock and one remote wipe. According to Microsoft, there is no expiry period from the time the package is downloaded before the service has to be activated.

The free My Phone service which provides users with the last known location where the device was synchronized will be available in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore. The service is compatible with Windows Mobile 6.0, 6.1 and 6.5 software.

Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile is also opening its virtual doors today with 246 applications, including Facebook, MySpace, Netflix, Twikini, WunderRadio, as well as Sudoku, Guitar Hero World Tour and Pac-Mac game series. The much-anticipated service which aggregates mobile apps for the platform comes after similar offerings from every other major mobile operating system.

According to Microsoft, Windows Marketplace for Mobile will be available in all Asia-Pacific countries where Windows Phones are retailing. However, paid programs are applicable for only Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan. Credit card is the only mode of payment for now although talks with service providers to provide telco billing are underway.

There is also a return policy that gives you a full refund for unwanted apps within a 24-hour period. The catch is, you are limited to only one refund per customer, per month.

The storefront will eventually include both Web and on-phone interfaces with a flexible billing system that charges to your monthly phone bill or credit card.
