Nokia lays out three new phones

By Damian Koh

SINGAPORE--Nokia today announced three new handsets--the E72, 5530 XpressMusic and 3710 fold--at the annual Nokia Connection 2009. The event was held at the Raffles City Convention Centre on Monday, a day prior to annual infocomm and technology show CommunicAsia 2009.

Starting with the Eseries, the E72 is modeled after the E71 with a full QWERTY keyboard, but comes with an optical navigation key, upgraded 5-megapixel camera and 3.5mm audio jack. Letting users plug in standard headphones sans an adapter is quickly becoming a standard feature on the Eseries, starting with the E63 and thereafter with the E75, E55 and E52 smartphones. It also has dedicated buttons to activate the Bluetooth and torch function on the bottommost row of the keyboard, resulting in a smaller spacebar.

Correction:

The E72 is the fifth Eseries smartphone with a 3.5mm audio jack and not second as previously reported.

Following the 5800 XpressMusic and the recently launched N97, the 5530 XpressMusic is the third Nokia handset that runs the Symbian S60 5th edition software. The touchscreen smartphone now has an enhanced Contacts bar for a maximum of 20 people, up from four on the 5800 XpressMusic. Unlike the latter which has a plastic build that gives it an entry-level feel, the 5530 XpressMusic will have a stainless steel finish.

Rounding up the trio is the 3710 fold clamshell that packs a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, Assisted-GPS, along with access to the Ovi store and a new S40 interface.

At the event, the company also identified the emerging markets as the next key growth sector.

"The next phase of growth will be very much driven by the emerging markets, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam", the vice president of Sales in Southeast Asia and Pacific for Nokia, Chris Carr, said in a statement.

According to a recent Gartner report, Nokia has a 36.2 percent market share worldwide with mobile phone sales of approximately 97.4 million units in the last quarter. This is a dip from 39.1-percent and 115 million, respectively, compared with the same quarter in Q1 2008.

Two of the three phones--the E72 and 5530 XpressMusic--will be available in Q3, while the 3710 fold is expected to hit the markets in the last quarter of the year.

Hi editors,
I thought the E75, E55 and E52 also have a 3.5mm headphone jack? Why it was mentioned in the article that the E72 was the second model after the E63 to have a 3.5mm headphone jack?
