Getting started on a BlackBerry

By Damian Koh

Our quick guide to the BlackBerry software gives you a glimpse into the operating system and how to get it working for you.

Making the jump to a BlackBerry smartphone

The biggest misconception about BlackBerry smartphones is that they are complicated and targeted only at business professionals. On the contrary, the BlackBerry user interface is one of the most polished and intuitive in the market. It uses an icon-based menu layout similar to most other operating systems, but the key difference is that it relies almost entirely on a trackball instead of a conventional four-way direction pad for menu navigation. Aside from that, the QWERTY keyboard is also a database of shortcuts. All these make for a rock-solid user experience.

On the hardware, recent BlackBerry smartphones like the Bold and Curve 8900 have stylish designs and more capable of handling multimedia content. The company also announced recently the launch of its application store App World which will make it easier for developers to host their programs in one place and for end-consumers to download third-party programs more easily.

Did you know?

A "battery pull" which involves removing the cell for about 30 seconds before reinserting it into the BlackBerry, is one of the most effective solutions to the BlackBerry software hiccups.

To get you started with your BlackBerry smartphone, we've compiled a quick checklist of 10 things to know about the BlackBerry software, along with details on how to install new applications, transfer multimedia content, surf the Web, send emails and work with Office documents.

For the purpose of this article, we used a BlackBerry Curve 8900 based on software v4.6.1.109 as reference. As such, there may be slight differences compared with other BlackBerry models and software versions.

all i can say is that BlackBerry's are the best smartphones I have ever used and still using.
I have used BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) with BlackBerry Connect devices, and with BlackBerry curve 8300 and my current handset is BlackBerry Bold 9000.

Simply saying its addictive, once you have it you can't leave without it, and does all the jobs weather it's email, browsing, media, im's, social networking, blogging... perfectly.
