Top 10 mobile devices of 2008![]() The iPhone 3G led the way with a touch user interface that's still one of the best, while the Android-based HTC G1 that runs on the open source platform has a wealth of potential waiting to be tapped. Nokia and RIM, too, came up with their own touch-enabled handsets. The 5800 XpressMusic was the first Nokia to run on the Symbian S60 5th Edition operating system but soon after, the company also announced the more feature-packed N97. RIM, on the other hand, rolled out quite a few consumer-centric messaging handhelds like the Bold and Storm which sports a unique clickable touchscreen display. These are not all. Over the next few pages, we round up 10 phones which we felt made an impact in the industry. See what they are. Note: The phones are listed in alphabetical order. the X1 definitely had a lot of hype and anticipation throughout the year. They made all their fans wait so long that a few SE diehards I know went for other models instead coz they couldn't stand the wait

SE has a history of doing this. They did it with P990i and then with the P1i. Both were (as a matter of fact still are) excellent devices. But I guess got way to under rated in the scheme of smart phones because of delayed launches.

the Omnia definitely moved lotsa volume for Samsung here in this part of the world. Looking forward to better stuff from Samsung next year!
the N97 is a good inclusion though we dunno when it's gonna land in consumers' hands yet.
E71 - really pretty looking one there but I'm surprised you didn't choose the Bold instead, John.
The G1's design is actually quite nice imho.
And Storm made it to the list just by being a touchscreen phone! haha... just kidding. There was definitely a lot of hype and anticipation on the Storm there.
Now on that iPhone 3G...

Have seen good smartphones this. Hope to see more the next year. One of my favourites were the HTC series. They did come up with good devices.
I own a HTC Touch Diamond and extrmemely happy with it. It is almost able to do everything a iphone does.
Anyway iphone is all hype and none. I know persons owning it and telling me they were expecting better from Apple

I have seen quite a lot of reviews and some of the top 10, i have seen it in action. However, my favorite will be Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic.
I want something in between Business and Entertainment, but not 'overloaded' with things... i just want a phone with 'exact' features i wanted... another on my wishlist is RIM's Bold, but it lost out to 5800 on camera, music and price point.

No way. A serious blackberry person would never rate 'storm' that high. Its biggest strength turns out to be its biggest problem - the clickable screen. Its okay if you want to enjoy DVD quality play back on a huge screen but when it comes to getting down to business its a real downer. Not at all suited to write messages or short emails. Very slow getting used to and extremely low sensitivity - too many wrong clicks. You need to turn the device around to get the full QWERTY. The accelerometer thing is also super sensitive; changing directions even with slightest of tilts. To top it all up - no Wifi.... comon blackberry!

I was choosing among Nokia E71, Nokia N95 8BG, iPhone and Samsung Omnia before finally settling for the last one.
I have been a Nokia user eversince. I love Nokia's friendliest user interface and their units are top performers in their class. The last time I went to get a new phone, I was seriously considering other brands.
The iPhone is the most attractively-designed unit there is in the market. Its iPod-like sound quality and flawless touch technology is the best and indeed a deal-maker (almost for me). However, features-wise, it sucks! No video call/ video capture/ FM radio and low resolution camera (2MP) to mention a few.
Samsung Omnia, on the other hand, is a much better alternative. Almost complete in features and functionality. Far from perfect but much better than the over-hyped iPhone. I'm happy with everything that comes with it, including the bugs! =D
I have been a Nokia user ever since so I have only praises for the E71 and N95 8GB.
