Nokia World 2008: Making the Internet personal

By Reuben Lee

BARCELONA, Spain--Empowering users to personalize the Internet--this was the key message at this year's annual Nokia World media and industry conference held in Barcelona. And the Finnish company believes it is uniquely positioned to make this happen.

Speaking at the opening of today's show, Nokia's president and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said: "This is a world where you will have the power to tailor and personalize your Internet how and when you like, to make your day-to-day life easier and more fulfilling." He strongly believes that Nokia, with more than a billion customers worldwide, "has the opportunity to put the power of the Internet into the hands of more people in more places than any other company".

Also speaking at today's keynote is Nokia's executive vice president of the new Markets unit, Anssi Vanjoki, who finally unveiled the company's best-kept secret, the full-featured touchscreen N97. Nokia's mystery phone has been so secret, even most of the company's employees haven't seen it yet.

In line with its "Transforming the Internet into your Internet" theme at the event, the Finnish giant announced several new initiatives including new Ovi services, Nokia Messaging and Maps on Ovi.

As for the N97, this is slated for worldwide delivery in the first half of 2009, and will be the newest flagship Nseries model. Not surprisingly, it comes with everything you can expect for a top-of-the-line Nseries handset, from Wi-Fi and GPS to a 5-megapixel camera (with Carl Zeiss optics) and the latest Series60 5th Edition operating system. What caught our attention were its slide-out QWERTY keypad, 3.5-inch (16:9 widescreen) touchscreen display, and whopping 32GB onboard memory. Did we also mention that it shares an uncanny resemblance to the HTC TyTN II, with its slideout, flip-up keypad?

Gee, I was all set to buy a HTC HD!! Looks like I may wait now. I love Nokia because their products are so user friendly. But I'll wait for reviews first before buying.

Geee! This is one milestone for Nokia. I do hope they realize the need to replace their crappy LED camera flash with xenon

Nokia is Slow Slow Slow..... or can i say one of the last to launch its Touch Series

Pratyay says...
Nokia finally is going to release their first touchscreen which is bound to be an iPhone killer. I disagree with GeekoVal that Nokia is slow. Just compare any normal nokia handset in the 5000 or 6000 series and it will beat the iPhone by leaps and bounds. There is only hype around the iPhone nothing else.

15.9mm thick? What were they thinking?

Bigwill2600 says...
THIS is what I have been WAITING FOR!
This is the reason why I did not buy the x1 or any other phone. Trying to stay loyal to nokia and having faith they would make their touchscreen N series. My only question is when do you think they will come up with a new communicator?

The iphone 3G is 13.5 (or was it 15.5??, im not sure) mm thick. The N97 has a full qweryty slide out keyboard and that will always add atleast 3 inch's of thickness. Not to forget the 5mp camera with a good lens and all the radio's in there, the thickness is not bad.

As someone who has owned both the 2g & 3g iphone + use the ipod touch all the time, I agree. Its nothing but hype.

Sure the web browsing experince is second to none and handels media quite well (As long as you play by their rules and use the turd of a software that is itunes). Apart from that a low/mid range nokia/samsung has it beat.

Typing on it is irritating. App's keep crashing or drain the battery way too fast. It has a horrible dropped call rate. The speakers suck. Camera sucks - BAD photo quality and no video of any sort. No copy/paste, useless bluetooth etc. Worst of all no multi-tasking ...I could go on all day, but in short; a decent pmp, but as a phone (& overall device) the n80 ive had for 28 months still does more for me than the iphone or ipod touch.

(Sorry for going on about it, but ive gotten sick of fan boys all over the internet saying how the iphone is better than anything Ever!. As Asians i feel were smarter techies who've had devices that could do more back in 03).

------

Onto the n97, it sounds great but im definately gonna wait for opinions of people who have actually used it before i run out to buy.

People like Eldar @ Mobile-Review have been saying for months that Nokia will release an 8mp phone @ WMC 09 (in Feb) that even in pre production hardware blows away the innov8 and C905.

Should be an interesting few months :).

God... I've been waiting for the 5800 Xpress Music for ages. Now on the exe of its release I don't know if I should wait even longer for one of these sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet sounding phones? 32gb on board storage! A-GPS, yes please.

How much longer can I last on my current hunk of crap phone.

Hurry up Nokia.

HTC Tytn II + HTC HD - WM OS = N 97

Late - very very late. Nokia lost big bucks not having a weapon vs HTC.

And another iphone killer? djee we hear nothing else the last 6 months.
It's a Nokia. Simple - reliable - affordable. No big deal nor 'wow" factor worth.

it has almost everything...

whew!

Just iPhone 3g :)

anomac says...
Late??? Perhaps. But everyone I know who has an iPhone all seem to say.... It's fantastic but....

Looks like Nokia has taken their time and removed the need for someone to use the "but" word. Well done to them.

Now lets see the reviews..
