How to select the right Nokia phone

By Damian Koh

From making paper in 1865, Nokia today has become the largest mobile phone manufacturer with a global device market share of 38 percent, according to figures published by the firm for Q3 2008. Its name comes from the Nokianvirta river, where the second wood pulp mill was built by Fredrik Idestam, father of Finland's paper industry. However, it's not paper that Nokia has come to be known for. The move to mobile communications in the 1980s was only the beginning that propelled the Finnish firm to what it is today.

Nokia's first GSM mobile phone--the Nokia 1011.
Devices and Services & Software are two of the main business groups in the Nokia corporate structure. The company's product portfolio has five main categories including the Eseries in Achieve, Nseries in Explore, Connect (mainstream devices), Entry (handsets for emerging markets) and Live (lifestyle-centric models).

Software-wise, Nokia uses the Symbian S60 platform extensively on its Nseries and Eseries mobiles, while the lower-end, non-smartphone handsets are based on the S40. The 5800 XpressMusic and N97 are currently the only Nokia smartphones that run the latest S60 5th edition version. Internet Tablets, which are touchscreen Linux handhelds optimized for Web connectivity, are also part of the Nseries mobiles.

As for services, the Finnish firm is integrating a suite of applications such as the Music Store, Maps and N-Gage into Ovi. The company also offers an unlimited music download service Comes With Music. This is currently available in Australia and Singapore in Asia-Pacific.
