Nokia 5800 XpressMusic vs. Samsung Omnia and Apple iPhone

By Damian Koh

Nokia has just taken the wraps off its spanking new touch-enabled 5800 XpressMusic model that runs on the S60 5th Edition platform. And we happen to have the Samsung Omnia SGH-i900 and the Apple iPhone 3G with us. So here's the three of them side-by-side.

From the left: The Samsung Omnia SGH-i900 followed by the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic then the Apple iPhone 3G.

Omnia should rule the specs,
Nokia would rule with price, and
Apple will rule the UI, which Samsung tried to emulate but i think it failed horrifically.

darkmax says...
1. Omnia has the most to offer in specs. iPhone probably has the least.

2. Samsung Omnia is the most value for money. iPhone is just a outdated device with a high price tag.

3. Both Apple iPhone and Samsung Omnia looks expensive with all the shiny metallic looking facades. Nokia looks... well... really cheap.

beatlesalbum says...
On NOKIA looking cheap, I would say it is because its a mid-level entry phone targeted at the Xpress Music line which does not have any expensive model in its series. Hence the material used and styling would be more middling. If they do release a touch base on the E or N series, you would bet that it would be more high end

Apple iPhone is too bad. It has no flash for camera, cannot support MMS and has no front facing camera. These are only a few missing components of the iPhone.iPhone is too expensive too.

Omnia has a superb camera compared to some of the Nseries phones from Nokia (N81, N76). The touch screen interface is also quite neat and sleek. Though I would prefer a S60 interface as it is very user-friendly.

As for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, there is nothing much I can say about it. It looks like it will be a good music phone. But I think that this is only Nokia's first attempt at touch screen phones. The N98 shall be a much better phone, I guess

anomac says...
Can't help thinking that all the people having issues with the Omnia might lower it's position here guys! I mean the iPhone is expensive but it works, what is the point in buying the Omnia only for it to remain in the service centre.

I have a nice Nikon so do not really nee the camera. Not sure why everyone is so hung up on Phone Cameras...

jhei says...
According to class, I'd have to put Nokia at the least part but when it comes to functions, it's a hands-off for Samsung. I'd have to agree with the person who says that the iPhone is just an outdated expensive phone.

darkmax says...
Actually Nokia being cheap has only half to do with its plasticky design.

1. Nokia N95 Classic, just look at the rails. They did not even do anything about it for the early adopters. Such a situation would not have occur to the flagship product of Apple, Samsung or Sony Ericsson, from the start of production.

2. Nokia has a division that makes super high-end handset for the ultra-rich. You wouldn't see any cheap rails on any of these. Guess who? Hint: it starts with a "V".

3. Nokia has such a huge market share these days, they really care not for their customers. This will eventually happen to any organistaion that has a huge market share or a monopoly.

On the side note, I have had an Omnia since it entered the market, I have yet to have a problem with it. The only issue I have had was the inability to upgrade the firmware without going into the service centre.

kcslchin says...
OMNIA: Best value for money with the specs offered
iPhone: Best user interface which OMNIA unfortunately can't match
Nokia Music Express: Only if you want a basic music phone that can't match the iPhone in quality.

dran1xx says...
I'm not even sure if it's fair to compare the 3 phones side by side? The 3 groups are targeting quite different sections of the market.... i personally think a better comparison would be perhaps between the XpressMusic and the iPhone, since both gunning on their multimedia capabilities - of which I'd say the iPhone takes the cake with their solid foundations in portable music devices.

encix says...
The Nokia's touch screen UI looks quite promising. However, it still needs some improvements, such as input methods, personally, i preffer Omnia's.
I think the 5800 design isn't impressive also, at least when it compared with Omnia and iPhone. The only strong point from this Nokia is its price, which i think really interesting for such devices, although to get that price, Nokia sacrifices the material & design.
So, let's wait & see what kind of devices we'll get when they plugged its touchscreen S60 on their N series.
Meanwhile, i'll stuck with my Omnia, and waiting to replace it with HTC Touch HD :)

anomac says...
Funny how you phrased it "...stuck with my Omnia" I guess this is the responce of a lot of people!

anomac says...
I Agree, the phones are targeting totally different market segments. The only people that seem to really enjoy the Omnia are self confessed propeller heads. I read one review saying that out of the box it was ordinary and it wasn't until you "tweaked" the phone that you got the most out of it. Definitely not a phone for the Hoi polloi.
Interested to see more of Googles UI on the HTC phones it could be a serious contender to the iPhone

iolo003 says...
Nokia XpressMusic will trump all the competition. Best value device that speaks true value and features and not by hype.

Omnia is a good phone but cannot connect to regular consumers, proof? less people care about it.

iPhone is the a cutting edge phone that gains all the hype but not everybody can afford it. its weakness.

darkmax says...
iolo0033, iPhone is not cutting edge... it was one year ago, now it (iPhone 3G) is just a piece of very expensive outdated fanservice.

1. Nokia Xpress music have the most important thing that makes it as a winner Stilus "active digitizer" , do Witu or Iphone have them..? no. if any time you want to sketch something it will be possible with nokia "and with special prog that will be easy to find",,. with your finger you just cant draw something on screen, but with stulys it is posible.. and compering with Witu it is also easy to use sensore screen,,. there is no doubt that Iphones sencore Screen is the best from those 3,, in 2nd place is nokia,.. witu is in the last place..
it is quiet nervous to use Witus Sencor screen., of cource it has nice and reach design, but its not enough...
comparing with UI Nokia is on 3rd place, s60 interface is primitive and not comfortable, Macs UI is the Best , samsung is on 2nd place..
-------------------
But all soft. for Iphone, you need to by,.. along with that,, soft for Windows Mobile and for Symbian,, is easy to finde free "cracked" version...
--------------------
it think this list is not compleated till ther is no SonyEricsson Xperia,.. the main thing that it have is Keyboard..
from the sencor sreen its not comfortable to type, while using simple keyboard is simpler and effectiver..
-------------------
I think the winner is nokia.. but if Iphone has Stilus "or active digitizer", it will be on the 1st place..
--------------------
some comperance from my point of view -- he u r
--------------------
Operating sys. -- UI -- Sencor -- Typing -- Multimed.
Nokia ---- *** -- b -- * -- *** -- ****
Witu ---- ** -- * -- bad -- bad -- ***
Iphone --- useless -- ***-- **** -- **** -- ***
Xperia --- ** -- ** -- ** -- ****** -- ****

darkmax says...
Before you make a comment like that, please go to your nearest Samsung flagship store and have a test drive. It does allow you to draw and scribble.

Secondly, go to a bookstore and learn how to spell.

You are obviously a Nokia fanboy.

good Multimedia,, are camera, Microsd.. and so on
typing and Information Entering-- best is the fastest..

thats all i think..

darkmax says...
actually good OS is one that is flexible. Symbian sucks at that. WinMo has potential as with the Apple OS.

How to compare the 3 phones with Xperia? It has a keyboard.

vin8tan says...
There were many so called iPhone/iPod killer, everyone tried to come up with something better, borrowing things from iPhone's GUI and buffing up the specs, but everyone failed to replicated something that the iPhone or any other mac has achieved , the Experience.

The user experience is so rich and has ruled the market, from the app store to iTunes, unless someone cripples Apple's strong hold on this, and weaken it through copyrights issues, Apple will always rule this sector. User experience, when copied usually fails and only back fires that lead to more iPhone sales.

darkmax says...
iPhone is just that, an experience. It has very little usability.

Though, I'll have to agree that other companies are trying so hard to emulate the iPhone UI.

However, on that note, Samsung's TouchWiz seems to offer something different and they are not trying to imitate the iPhone's OS this time, but that of Windows.

iPhone is just that, an experience. It has very little usability.

Really, what isn't usable on it. The ability to install and use 3rd party apps & Games? The Google Maps, The great Media Player, the ability for me to syn with my Server account. Web browsing SMSing (Ok MMS is a nono) But I can email a photo or video, not that I have ever done either. And a friend took some piccies the other day, they were not all that bad! (I have a nice Nikon for taking photos!) You also said it's not cutting edge, why isn't there a plethora of phones out there that can beat it, so called iPhone Killers. Many have tried and all so far have failed.

Darky I think that you should stop there. You have this thing against them, which is fine, but it is a very usable and user friendly phone.

Apple HK is offering the 16gig for S$1157.00 on it's website. What is an Omnia worth outright? About the same I would think. Why do people label the iPhone expensive?

Peace

Geez, almosst everyone is picking on the Nokia 5800. It still hasn't come out yet. How can you be so sure of it's weaknesses such as build quality and the user interface or even it's processor speed? From what I have seen, the 5800 is a very reasonable phone for a very reasonable price about $390 or about Php19,000. I mean it almost has every feature out there right now. I'd probably buy this when it comes out. I really don't care much for the iphone. It's just an over hyped device missing some pretty basic features like SMS forwarding. That's really funny. Don't know much about the Omnia though.

All Nokia smartphones that i have used, are very slow compering with windows mobiles, and with i phone.. and thats way i think that it will work slow as other Nokia smartphones,..
If you need a smartphone for just sending Emails listening to music than u don't have idea what is smartphone,..
what about really important software like "Translators, or wifi hacking softs or prof, soft like that which needs a keyboard",,
thats why i put Xperia on top of them,.
my curent phone is Nokia from N serias, and when u install on all nokias more than 5 apps it becomes really slowly. its fact..

samsung, maybe in your region omnia's sencor is working faster, but here if i compare it with Iphone, it is too slow.

----
sorry for my English.

vin8tan says...
The reason why al smart phones work slower than expected when compared tot he Smart phone is simple. The iPhone's processor is 600 over MHz, but they are only quoting 400 odd Mhz to developers and Mac Os has traditionally required less computing power for look good and achieving more. They don't over quote the speed thus leaving more room for processing :)

zorkor says...
iPhone is a complete joke. Apples strategy is simple and cunning. Create a huge demand of its trashy products by hype, then slowly release it to the market while continuously updating with firmware. This strategy lets apple to get away with many things.

Its like giving a soaked wet piece of bread to the person who is dying of hunger, thats how apple works. Make them hungry and give them any trash and they will take it.

iPhone has only its UI as its main weapon, else it gets banged by any phone manufacturer in the world.

Heck it cant even hold its call signal straight let alone competing with a monster like Nokia.

Another FLOP phone from nokia......im sorry but u guys have to admit that whenever nokia tried to make a music phone they were failed.....one of my friend had nokia express music 5610 but guys that phone was just a waste....very very bad sound quality...not even good while using handsfree....and now he is using Sony Ericsson walkmen phones.....its not about loudness....its about quailty. And Apple iPhone ive tried it once but it didnt convinced me......so as my second choice is Samsung....i will vote for Samsung Omnia...
Ahsan.

Well, guess Nokia really have to apply good "use of" on their phone, even my N95 (not 8GB) build with louzy material, I would have change brand if not because of the ease of use.

i believe that all the nokia enthusiasts such as i, that hates the iphone and samsung interface but loves the design would drool over this creation. Although the 5-series sounds cheap i think nokia has taken a step further by matching samsung and apple.

The only thing im worried about now is the UI of the 5800.. will read feedbacks first before getting one!

Nokia's interface is poor, I agree,, and with new Symbian it will not become better.

couple hours ago I watch some tests and possibilities of omnia on youtube, and I was surprised how fast it works.
Vista-like Interface also impressed me, Omnia vs. Nokia, I guess omnia is a winner.

Can anyone help me? So i wanna buy a phone.... its a battle between Nokia 5800 EM and the i900 Omnia from samsung. I`m looking for a device that will be most used for MEDIA(mp3 and videos) especialy, seondary features are WIFI GPS and Games & Appz. i like the 5800 because it has a stylus embeded in its housing rather than the omnia which has a hanging one, this is my primary dificulty in making the choice.
Other thing are:
- headset (if someone can help me in decideing which is better in : comfort quality durability and simplyicity)
- Symbian is a primative OS and i`m afraid that there will be no usefull appz(aplications).
- Durability nokia 5800 EM is made of plastic and omnia is metal.
- Hardware Omnia rules in every way exept screen which has 16 Mil. Colors and a mush higher rezolution. omnia processor is about twice as fast as the 5800 and it has more RAM`s and ROM
Finaly i`m more willing to buy the 5800 too bad its running on Symbian.
