Using the iPhone 3G

Does it support Microsoft Exchange? Are there any kinks?
Yes, with the 2.0 software, you can sync your Outlook email, contacts and calendar with the iPhone. However, it syncs with data from only one Exchange account. Existing calendar and contact entries on the iPhone (if any) will also be wiped out if you choose to synchronize with Exchange. You should be alerted with a message: "Existing contacts will be removed from your iPhone".

Does the iPhone 3G support turn-by-turn navigation?
No, it doesn't, at least not now.

Can I use the GPS without using a data connection?
Yes you can, but it may take longer for the phone to get a location fix. If you've had a location fix at a particular place before, it should show cached map data.

How's the battery performance like?
Be prepared to charge it daily if you have push email turned on, listen to music or surf the Internet a fair bit. For a more complete breakdown of battery performance, refer to our full review of the iPhone 3G.

Can I forward an SMS, copy-and-paste text, send MMS, record videos and do video calls?
No, period. Bummer.

Does the iPhone 3G support landscape mode for typing?
Again, this is a feature which can potentially improve the typing experience, but no, it's not available.

Why is the iTunes service still not available in Singapore?
We suspect the delay could be due to rights management issues in the different countries, but an Apple representative told us it's a matter of time before the iTunes store is available in the island-state.

How do I look after the iPhone 3G, especially since it has such a large screen and the back cover is said to be prone to cracks?
With a large 3.5-inch display, it would probably be wise to get a screen protector for the LCD. The plastic back cover is also prone to scratches, so a pouch would be a good investment if you don't want your iPhone to end up permanently scarred just after a few days.

How do I download music from iTunes on my iPhone 3G if there is no iTunes store in my country?
You could buy a stored value card, or charge your purchases using a credit card with a billing address from a country that offers iTunes. For countries that don't have iTunes yet, tapping the iTunes icon on the iPhone will redirect the user to the App Store instead.

i want to use a malaysia digi sim card . it is possible?

justanalvin says...
Yes, you may. All phone sold by telcos in singapore (including the iphone 3G) are all official unlocked set which is a requirement by the IDA. These unlocked set are not just limited for usage of M1, SingTel & Starhub only, it can also be used with any GSM Sim card worldwide.

here is my plan .
since my wife mobile is out of contract. i will use her number to sign up for a new singtel plan. (she is grumbling that her work place signal is weak for singtel) i will go for the iTwo Value 48.15 is good. she do not use data and i dont encourage 3G plans also.(if you know what i mean)
i also intend to trade in my almost 1 yr old N95 for 230 as listed at singtelshop.com
so i will end up paying sg278 which is around us199 for a 16gb

too bad i will be back only tomorrow. hopefuly the stock wont run out

wsc says...

justanalvin says...
Yup :) IDA singapore do not allow telco to sell phone that are network locked. It is also further confirm by an evaluation this noon: My colleague managed to queue up for a set and try out a M1(which is mine) & a DiGi(MY Telco) simcard and it works.

what about video calls ? go or no go? dont think so right ? MMS issued not even ironed out, still cant send MMS

justanalvin says...
Video calls? no, due to there are no front-facing camera. However, since it has 3G capability, you might be able to see your friend on your screen except your friend are unable to see you? i m not not sure abt this too..

MMS issued not iron out? hahaha, apple never plan to released this phone with MMS capability initial and i doubt there is anything they will do to "iron out". The iphone is design this way by forcing people to use email and attached file instead.. however lots of people do jailbreak their phone to download 3rd apps to "use" the MMS...

cant send MMS?????cant tell cos i'm still fiddling with it................one thing is iPhone displays SMS text messages as an ongoing conversation....................yep, it does has its limitation deespite being 3G enabled.

blim888 says...
I hope there is also a law that prohibits network locks in the Philippines.

so you see .. despite the problems faced with the iphone.. no this no that.. it comes to show that its not the price nor the phone capability, this all shows that this is a phone worth using and that its worth the wait. As for me I am waiting for the Iphone "Nano"

Yup, u can use other SIM card on the Iphone if its bought from Singtel / Singapore Unlocked phone. For a non-contract 8G, it should be around the SGD900~SGD1K range. Top up SGD100 more and u'll get a 16G.

This package have broadband?

justanalvin says...
I believe non-singaporean are able to purchase the contract phone of coz there might be some terms which i m not sure of. And yes, when u bring the iphone to malaysia, u can change to your own local sim card to use.
Those iFlexi plans you mention come with mobile broadbrand of 1GB usage per month; and 1GB is more than enough for relatively heavy usage.I had been blastingly surfing on my phone and its about only 400 ~ 500mb per month so far.. Oh yes, the mobile broadband bandwith bundle is only applicable for surfing in singapore only, if u surf in malaysia, the charges will be additional. Just to serve as a guide, 250mb of surfing cost about SGD1K is its not covered under the bundle.

Hi Waynce, iphone 3G comes in only 8Gb and 16Gb. I believe you are looking for a non-contract set since you are not using postpaid? 8Gb set is about S$1000 and 16Gb is about S$1130 as quoted from mobilesquare.com
