Sony Ericsson brings out five new phones at CommunicAsia

By Reuben Lee

SINGAPORE--Japanese-Swedish phone maker Sony Ericsson announced a slew of new handsets and mobile accessories at a regional press event, held in conjunction with CommunicAsia 2008, at the iconic Singapore Flyer.

Much of the attention at the launch was, however, focused on one product, the C905 Cyber-shot. Sporting an industry-leading 8.1-megapixel camera, the C905 is not only Sony Ericsson's highest-resolution camera-phone to date, it will also be one of the highest-resolution camera-phones outside Korea when it becomes available in the last quarter of 2008. Also noteworthy is the fact that the C905 is Sony Ericsson's first slider in its Cyber-shot series.

The announcement of the C905 confirms what was first leaked onto the Web about a week ago. The handset will be equipped with both Xenon and LED flashes, and will sport many of the imaging features found on dedicated digital cameras, including autofocus, face detection and image stabilizer. It has the full spectrum of connectivity options, from Bluetooth to USB, Wi-Fi and 3G/HSDPA. GPS and A-GPS are also available for geotagging of photos and navigational support, while its 2.4-inch QVGA display is protected by a scratch-resistant mineral glass material.

The C905 is, however, not the only camera-phone at the launch. The S302 Snapshot, which combines a 2-megapixel camera with a slim candybar exterior, is aimed at those looking for a more affordable imaging solution.

For mobile gamers, Sony Ericsson has introduced the F305, a slider which features built-in motion-sensing capabilties as well as dedicated gaming keys and horizontal gameplay. An optional Power Pack CPP-100 can be used to extend battery life on-the-go. Rounding up the five handsets are two basic phone models, the entry-level K330 and the camera-less J132. Surprisingly, Sony Ericsson did not unveil any new Walkman phones this time round.

Sony Ericsson also unveiled three new Bluetooth headsets (HBH-PV715, HBH-PV720 and HBH-PV740) as well as what it claims is the first HSPA USB modem with an onboard M2 and microSD card slot (MD400; MD400g comes with a built-in GPS receiver).

All the handsets are expected in the fourth quarter of 2008, except for the F305 and K330 which will roll out in Q3.
