Prizefight: Apple iPhone vs. Samsung SGH-F700

By CNET Asia staff

Judges: Damian Koh, John Chan

The iPhone has come a long way and we believe most readers would have heard of it at some point of time, so we'll spare the history lesson. When the SGH-F700 (also known as the Ultra Smart F700 back then) was announced in February 2007, many people thought it would be the one to give the iPhone a run for its money with features the latter didn't have. Now, more than a year later, we pit these two handsets with large touchscreen LCDs in a prizefight to see if the F700 was just lots of hype and whether the iPhone would emerge unscathed.

Ding ding ding!

About the judges
Damian Koh firmly believes that springy hardware buttons will eventually triumph over unreliable touch keys. Truth is, he's just a stick in the mud and refuses to accept that times have changed. In fact, he's embarrassed to admit he can name almost any phone he sees in the market. If only he gets out more.

John Chan is a self-confessed user-interface addict. Give him the latest and greatest gadgets, but if it takes too many buttons presses to get to the desired menu, it's junk to him. Actually, that's really just his excuse for using an outdated phone because he can't afford any better. Hey, journalists are poor writers, ok?

Disclaimer: This article is only a quick comparison of the Apple iPhone and the Samsung SGH-F700 based on the judges' experience with the phones. As the iPhone isn't officially available in Asia yet, we had to use an unlocked iPhone for this feature.

hmm why pit the samsung against iPhone? Yeah I read through the article, but on the other hand I've already anticipated the iPhone to win. Perhaps a more worthy competitor should be used instead..

i'd agree with ninjaboy - i thought the iPhone had won the fistfight before the bell had even rung to start the 1st round...

I agree with the posters above. This is no fight. The F700 is simply not a good enough phone for the iPhone. Why not use the LG KU990 to compare?

nasman says...
lets wait for the Sony Ericsson Xperia to turn up... whenever that is... to give the iPhone a run for its money. The F700 at its current state is not good enough.

What do you think about Samsung? no capacity to fight iPhone? Samsung for me is the best, even the Cellularphone or the MP3, why dont you try Samsung? then prove it, what is the better Samsung or iPhone? aldo iPhone is attractive than Samsung but for me Samsung is the best.

I think LG KS20 should be pick against Iphone. It will win Iphone in all aspects, except the UI.

Every brand has its own loyal customers. How to win them over is a big task for them. Apple is a niche for those seeking the unconventional. Its has been regarded as trendy fashion icon. Thus the hype about Iphone.
Samsung, on the other hand, due to its hard to use interface previously has learnt alot and is improving. However, innovation is not their strong point. If they do not come out with something totally new that can blow the mind of many, they will be seen as "copy cat". Eg: Symbian from Nokia and the idea of MP3 with Phone from SE.

IPhone should be compared to Samsung Omnia. Not this one which was released in Febraury 2007!

From size to internal memory to usage to even dimensions, both phones are so alike. And they are pretty much released in the same period in Sg.

Make a comparison between them. That'll be a true fight which is nice to watch.
